IPM Update – Cotton Growth and Fleahoppers

Cotton maturity ranges from 5-6 leaf to third-grown square.  Continue to scout for cotton fleahoppers, I have fields with more than 40 per 100 plants.  The Economic Threshold is 15 per 100 plants so these field should be treated to prevent square loss.  Some fields or parts of fields are yellowing due to excessive soil moisture making nitrogen less available.  This should be corrected once the soil dries if the field was properly fertilized. I have had several conversations about the temperatures we have had so far this… Read More →

Cotton Update 6/9/22

Cotton plants in most fields have 14-18 nodes on the plant and 5-7 nodes above white flower (NAWF). Spotty rains fell over the past week but the forecast does not look very promising for additional rainfall. Fortunately, the insect pressure continues to be relatively low but continue to watch for stink bugs and bollworm. For stink bugs, inspect the inside of 1-inch bolls to see if feeding caused warts or stained lint on the inside of the boll. We are in the third and fourth weeks of bloom… Read More →

Rain and Square Loss

Scouting fields this week we are finding each field is different from the next. Much of this has to do with how the rain affected the field. If the water got off the field or did not stand for too many days, the crop was better off. Fields that held water are more likely to have square losses. Many of these fields have lost the larger squares leaving fruit smaller than match-head square. An example of this is shown. I removed the leaves showing the lower four squares have… Read More →

Cotton IPM Update – 5/26/2017

Cotton maturity across the Mid-Coast ranges from half-grown square to near cutout. Pest insects to be aware of include cotton fleahopper, bollworms, stink bugs and verde plant bugs. Continue to monitor young cotton for cotton fleahoppers until the first week of bloom.  If you have a decent fruit set at bloom of at least 70% retention, the cotton fleahopper should not be a pest after first bloom. By bloom, the cotton plant should have 80% or more of the harvestable fruit.  Since the fleahopper is not able to cause square loss to squares larger than… Read More →
