Cotton Fleahopper Numbers on the Rise

Cotton fields range from pinhead square to early bloom. Most fields are susceptible to cotton fleahopper damage and the potential for bollworm losses. We are finding cotton fleahoppers in numbers as high as 1 per plant, averaging around 20-30 per 100 plants. Continue to scout for cotton fleahoppers through the first week of bloom. This pest may cause fruit shed of small pinhead squares. Squares larger than matchhead size are generally safe from fleahopper damage. Once the plant has reached bloom, 80-90% of the fruit that will be… Read More →

Squaring Cotton may have Cotton Fleahoppers

Cotton maturity ranges from 2-3 leaf to matchhead square and some fields have multiple stages of cotton. Fields with squaring plants should be inspected weekly for Cotton Fleahoppers. This can be done visually or by using a small, 2-gallon bucket once the plants are 12 inches tall. Treat fields that exceed an economic threshold of 15 fleahoppers per 100 plants. Treating fields for cotton fleahoppers prior to squaring is not an effective management practice and will only increase the cost of production without a yield increase. This practice… Read More →

Cotton IPM Update – 5/26/2017

Cotton maturity across the Mid-Coast ranges from half-grown square to near cutout. Pest insects to be aware of include cotton fleahopper, bollworms, stink bugs and verde plant bugs. Continue to monitor young cotton for cotton fleahoppers until the first week of bloom.  If you have a decent fruit set at bloom of at least 70% retention, the cotton fleahopper should not be a pest after first bloom. By bloom, the cotton plant should have 80% or more of the harvestable fruit.  Since the fleahopper is not able to cause square loss to squares larger than… Read More →

Insects in the Field this Week – 5/12/07

There are a number of insects to be on the lookout for this week in the Grain Sorghum, Cotton and Soybeans of the Texas Coast. Grain Sorghum Grain sorghum fields vary widely with regard to crop maturity. The older fields are blooming and the youngest fields are 4-6 leaf. All sorghum fields should be monitored weekly for insect pests. The one insect that can cause problems season long is the Sugarcane Aphid. I have found them in low numbers along field margins and expect to see populations rise… Read More →
