Wharton County 4-H Face Masks Project

THIS IS A VOLUNTARY PROJECT and WE ASK THAT YOU DO NOT PUT YOURSELF IN HARMS WAY TO GET ITEMS TO COMPLETE THIS IF YOU CHOOSE TO.

Facemask Instructions

Hello Wharton County 4-Hers,

We hope this note finds you all well.  As many of you might have seen on Facebook and the news people are making masks to try to help protect against the Covid-19 virus.

The Texas Fashion and Interior Design sponsor agents have been contacted by Dr. Tom Fisher, an oncologist with Texas Oncology.  They are willing to accept ALL masks that we can produce and even make it a contest.  These homemade masks may not be as effective against the virus as the medical grade ones are. However cancer patients wear the masks to protect against dust and minor illness on an everyday basis and will be able to continue to use these after this crisis.  This will also allow them to send the medical grade masks to those more in need.

Instructions:  Attached you will find written instructions and pattern for making adult size face masks.  A video demonstration is available at  https://youtu.be/VgHrnS6n4iA We ask that you use prewashed 100% cotton fabric (with or without a layer of fusible interfacing).  When possible, please use non-scented laundry detergent and no fabric softener when prewashing fabric.

To be considered for the contest we must collect the mask by Monday April 6 so we can mail them to arrive at their destination by Friday April 10.  If you plan to participate please let Ms. Laura know so we can make arrangements to collect them.  There is some fabric and elastic available at the CEO if you need it. Mrs. Burns also has some interfacing/pellon if anyone needs some.

With the ever-changing rules for social distancing you will have to make an appointment to meet with Ms. Laura because all county offices will be closing to the public.  These rules may change as time goes by so be sure to call before you plan to go there.

Thank you,
Leslie Zahn & Kasey Burns
