As many of you know First Lady Barbara Bush passed away yesterday. The funeral is scheduled to be in Houston on Saturday morning and then they will travel to the George Bush Library in College Station. Since the Bush Library is right down the road from the Louis Pearce Pavilion (location for Livestock Judging), we are going to have to make some adjustments to our day as the procession will drive by our judging facility.
We have discussed this at length today and have decided that adjusting the start time and moving the awards is better than changing dates or location.
Livestock Judging Time
We will be moving the time frame up by an hour.
6:00 am | Registration | Pearce Pavilion |
6:30 am | Announcements and putting contestants into groups | Pearce Pavilion |
7:00 am | Contest begins | Pearce Pavilion |
9-10 am | Finish Judging | Pearce Pavilion |
10:30-12 | Complete Intermediate Reasons by this time | Pearce Pavilion |
11-12 pm | Complete Senior Reasons by this time | Pearce Pavilion |
Officials immediately following completion of reasons
(This will be on a very limited time frame.) |
Pearce Pavilion | |
2:00 pm | Awards ceremonies (approximate time) | Kleberg Building |
District 4 – 123 Kleberg Center
District 5 – 127 Kleberg Center
District 8 – 115 Kleberg Center
District 9 – 113 Kleberg Center
District 11 – 117 Kleberg Center |
We must be out of Pearce Pavilion by 12 noon – absolutely no later than 1 pm. If you are still at Pearce after that time, you will most likely have to stay there until the funeral procession leaves at an estimated time of 5 pm.
There will be port-a-potties available outside Pearce Pavilion for the day.
Meat Judging and Soil Judging times and locations remain the same.
Parking
When parking at Kleberg Animal & Food Sciences Center for the awards or Rosenthal Meat Science & Technology Center for the Meat Judging Contest, you may park in lots 74 or 61. Do not park in a 24-hour reserved spot or a pay-to-park spot. If so, you risk receiving a parking ticket.
Traffic/Roads
The news is reporting that the funeral procession will come in on Highway 6 from Houston, proceed down Texas Avenue, turn left onto George Bush Drive (directly in front of Pearce Pavilion), and then right into the Bush Library. This means that Texas Avenue and George Bush Drive will be shut down completely.
We have also received notice that Penberthy Boulevard (the “new” road along the southwest side of Pearce) will be closed at some point, too.
It is recommended that you stay on the northeast side of campus and away from anywhere near the Bush Library. It is likely that FM 2818 (Harvey Mitchell Parkway) will also be closed.
When coming to Kleberg/Rosenthal, it is recommended you enter from University (FM 60) and turn onto Olsen Boulevard. It weaves around the Heep Center and Kleberg. You can access parking lots 61 and 74 from Olsen Boulevard.
This section of a Google map will get you close to the area of campus for our contests on Saturday. (Pearce Pavilion is near the bottom/south of the map. Parking Area 61 is located near West Campus Garage at the corner of Olsen and John Kimbrough Blvd.)

Weather
When looking at the forecast this morning, there is a 100% chance of rain on Saturday. For Livestock Judging, registration will take place inside Pearce, but parents, coaches, agents, etc. will be asked to set up your 4-H members and then exit the building promptly so that we may begin on time.
It is critical that everyone cooperate in order for us to complete judging and reasons in a timely manner. Again, we MUST exit the facilities prior to the roads being shut down.
