Drought Proofing The Ranch Online Course

While the majority of Texas is being impacted by Drought, this Drought Proofing the Ranch course will offer timely advice and guidance. Not currently affected by the drought? It is never too early to start preparing your ranch!

This course is currently being offered free to the first 100 participants. Remember, this course is a self-paced course, enroll today and start learning and preparing to drought proof your ranch!

What to Expect from the Course

“The course will help producers develop risk management strategies, identify the best risk management tools and recognize the importance of advanced preparation for when a drought occurs. The goal is for producers to learn to identify drought conditions and to develop a plan to mitigate losses due to drought ahead of time.” – Dr. Morgan Treadwell, one of the authors of the course.

While this course is only a two-hour course and participants are able to view the content at their own pace. This course is packed with knowledge covering the following topics:

  • Creating a Plan to Address Livestock Management During Drought
  • Risk Management Products for Drought Mitigation: Forage and Livestock Insurance Options
  • Nutritional and Other Management Strategies
  • Rangeland Management and Wildfire Mitigation Strategies During Drought
  • Economic Management Strategies to Minimize Drought Impact
  • Evaluation Strategies for Feeding Through a Drought and Longer-Term Consequences
  • Tax Implications for the Sale of a Large Number of Livestock
  • Stocking Rate adjustments and their consequences

In addition to our very own Dr. Morgan Treadwell, Rangeland Specialist, this course also includes AgriLife Extension Specialists – Dr. Jason Smith – Beef Cattle Specialist, Pancho Abello Vernon Economist, and former Extension Economist – Dr. Justin Benavidez.

“Drought is an ever-present specter for Texas livestock and forage producers, and this course will help producers create plans for managing livestock and rangelands, specifically, brush and weeds with herbicides, during drought. It is our hope that participants will increase their understanding of drought management strategies proactively” – Dr. Morgan Treadwell.
