Dr. Jordan Shockley, Casey Matzke, and I have been working hard to develop a library of carbon-related resources through grant funding from the Southern Extension Risk Management Education Center.
In particular, our publications focus on what changes we are seeing in carbon markets, and what producers and landowners need to know going forward. Whether you are someone who has already entered into a soil carbon contract, or someone who aims to stay far away from them, this information will be helpful in understanding the current situation regarding carbon and where we believe the markets and industry are headed.

We have drafted fact sheets on a number of topics:
- What is ESG and why do Companies Care?
- Carbon Insets versus Carbon Offsets
- Key Legal Considerations for Carbon Related Agreements
- Carbon Risk Management Checklist
- How to Find an Agricultural Lawyer
- Understanding and Evaluating Carbon Contracts
We have also published short videos discussing each of these topics along with videos outlining carbon hot topics and carbon frequently asked questions here. Additionally, in that same playlist, we have a recording of our hour-long webinar on the evaluation of carbon markets. (If you watch the webinar video and take the evaluation linked in the episode notes by 7/31, we will be drawing for a winner of a $100 gift card for your choice of beef from Little Cattle Co.)
Lastly, we’ve done a couple of carbon-related podcast episodes over the years, which you can listen to below:
- Carbon markets
- Carbon contracts
- Climate disclosure laws and regulations (Note: This was from 2024 and the status of the SEC rule has changed.)
- Carbon capture and sequestration
- ESG litigation and agriculture
Funded by USDA-NIFA-Southern Risk Management Education Center through the project titled “Preparing Farmers and Ranchers for the Evolution of Carbon Markets.”
