Recent Interviews & Articles

I’ve been able to give a number of interviews recently on a whole host of ag law-related topics.  We’ve covered some really important issues like getting documents in writing, succession planning, and mental health.  I thought it might be fun to share a few of those interviews today.

Beyond the Handshake: 6 Legal Documents that Matter

I enjoy any chance to chat with Shelley Huguley at Southwest Farm Press.  We caught up earlier this year at the Plains Cotton Growers Annual Meeting where we talked about my presentation.  My focus was on six key legal documents that rural landowners and ag producers should have in writing.  From leases, to easements, to end-of-life documents, be sure you have each of these documents drafted and ready!  [Read article here.]

Connecting Agriculture and Law with Tiffany Lashmet

Earlier this year, I had the chance to sit down with Venessa Wood as a guest on her show, Ag Talk: Your Story Matters.  It was fun to share my story and how I have been able to connect my love for agriculture with my love for the law.  [Listen here.]

5 Steps to Successful Transition Planning

In June, I had the chance to present at the Beef Improvement Federation Conference.  I was extremely impressed with this event at the caliber of attendees and other speakers.  My presentation focused on estate and succession planning for younger producers.  Drovers was in the audience and summarized my talk into an article.  [Read article here.]   The key?  Just get started doing something!  Gather up documents.  Start the conversation.  Call the attorney’s office.  Just get started.

Strong Roots, Heavy Loads:  Mental Health in Agriculture

I was really honored to be asked to be a guest on the Conservation Stories podcast with Tillery Sims.  Tillery invited me along with my colleagues, Dr. Mikaela Spooner and Miquela Smith to talk with her about mental health and agriculture, what the statistics show, what resources exist, and the Farm Hope program we recently helped begin at Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and the Texas A&M Telehealth Institute.  [Listen here.]

Embrace Those 18 Summers

I love having the opportunity to write for the Our Rural Roots column at Progressive Farmer.  It is so fun to share thoughts and stories, and I really love getting to work with my editor, Pam Smith.  This month, I wrote a column discussing the social media pressure about only having 18 summers with our kids.  [Read article here.]
