To have an idea of the effectiveness of the prescribed burn on Juniper, it is a good idea to estimate the % moisture. Strip Juniper leaves (about 100 grams) at about should height, taking only the green leaves, with no brown stems and place in paper bags. Be sure to weigh the bags empty and then again with the juniper leaf sample. Dry the sample in an oven at 100 degrees F over night or in a microwave over, drying at 30 second intervals until the weight of the bag plus the sample does not change.
Take a final weight of the bag plus to the dried sample. Calculate Juniper leaf moisture as:
B = Bag Weight
W = Sample Weight – B
D = Sample Weight – B
((W-D) /D X 100 = % moisture
