Sent,

Good afternoon Tarrant County 4-H,

The Optimist Club of Fort Worth is a youth organization that provides many great programs for our community as well as scholarships. The group reached out to us to see if any high school 4-H youth ages 16 or older would be interested in working at there Christmas tree lot starting after thanksgiving at Farrington field in Fort Worth. The group has 4 hour shifts available and pays $60 per shift. This can be a one-time service or many days. There are weekday and weekend opportunities. If you have in questions or would like to participate, feel free to reach out to Jordan Peldyak at the Extension office Jordan.Peldyak@ag.tamu.edu.

CHANGES to 2025-2026 Texas 4-H Record Book Family Guide

Sent,

Dear Tarrant County 4-H Families,

The 2025-2026 Texas 4-H Record Book Family Guide is now available. You will notice a few changes to the record book format for this coming year. Recordkeeping is one of the most valuable life skills taught in the Texas 4-H program. Members are encouraged to keep project records throughout the year and review them annually by completing a Texas 4-H Record Book.

The primary purpose of a Record Book is to help youth learn how to set goals, work toward them, reflect on their progress, and then set new and higher goals for the future. A secondary benefit is preparing young people for real-world applications such as academic scholarships, college admissions, and even job opportunities. This secondary benefit is the reason for the changes you will see in the new format.

Notable Changes:

  • Replaced the 4-H Story with Narratives:
    • About Me Narrative (All Ages)
    • College & Career Exploration Narrative (Intermediate & Senior Only)
    • Essay Prompt Narrative which changes annually (Senior Only)
  • Added “My Year in Photos” section
    • This page is separate from the written narratives and forms.
  • Section I – Projects
    • All project information will be noted in this section (page limits have increased slightly)
    • Encouraged to include at least 4 projects with their main project (to reflect the record book category they are competing in) being the first entry
    • However, when judging, one should note QUALITY of the project experience vs QUANTITY
      • A young person with 3 active projects may have a lot more of true project experience than those with 6 projects
  • Removed Section IV – Other 4-H Projects (added into Section I)
  • Forms can reflect all years in 4-H, not just current and previous 3 years
    • This was a change because a 4-H member for example may have won a Major Livestock Show in elementary school and that is still considered one of their highest achievements even in High School
    • This also mirrors the requirements of the Texas 4-H Opportunity Scholarship which allows all years of 4-H involvement
  • Section V – Non 4-H Activities should still focus on more recent years since is to demonstrate your involvement outside of 4-H in more real-time
  • Removed Animal Agriculture Category and replaced with Open/Self-Directed
  • All record books should be typed. Handwritten books should not be submitted. We understand it may be harder for younger kids to type; therefore, an adult can take their written presentation and type into the format. This is a move towards the potential future of the submissions being in an online format only.
  • DISCONTINUED ZSuites. We are exploring alternative online platforms for the future years.

Prairie View A&M University Goat Giveaway

Sent,

Dear 4-H Members and Families,

The Prairie View A&M 4-H Youth Development Unit is happy to announce that the Meat Goat Give-Away committee would like to share an opportunity to expand your youth agricultural program. The 4-H Goat Kid Giveaway Program has promoted dairy goats as a 4-H project since 1987. Since 2019, we have invested over $46,000 by offering both dairy & meat goats to deserving youth across Texas.

Applications are open from September 18th to October 1st. The committee will judge the applications by looking for evidence that the applicant has the resources (safe, adequate housing and companion animal(s) and the knowledge (we can teach you) to properly take care of the goat and show commitment to furthering their overall 4-H involvement. The matrix will also include an “evaluation section” determining previous participation follow-up data. Applicants do not need to have previously raised goats to enter this program—they need a safe, loving home and the desire to learn about goat husbandry. The committee will inform the youth of their acceptance in the give-away by October 7th.

I’ve attached the marketing flyer for the project. We would love to have your 4-H, FFA, or youth organization participate this year.

Students will need two letters of recommendation. If the goat is staying at any FFA facility, one letter of recommendation must be emailed to cmpierfax@pvamu.edu from the FFA teacher’s school address. Please ask the teacher to include the student’s name in the subject line.

Only five goats will be awarded.

Click here for the link to the application.

Club Officer Training

Sent,

Dear 4-H Members and Families,

Make plans to join us for the Tarrant County 4-H Youth Council Club Officer Training on Monday, September 22 (6:30 p.m. at the Extension Office).

All members are welcome! It will be a great chance to network with other 4-Her’s and meet youth from across the county! We will also be establishing county wide youth committees for Social Events and Community Service. This is a great way to get engaged in the 4-H program beyond the club level.

*You do not need to be a current club officer to attend.

Let us know if you have questions!

Sincerely,

Miss Kate
