Smith Walker Research Unit

The Smith/Walker research unit consists of 3½ sections of land approximately eight miles south of Vernon on Highway 183. It is comprised of approximately 550 acres of cultivated land and 1690 acres of rangeland. The cultivated land is used predominantly for research programs with small grains as dual-purpose forage and grain crops and with introduced forage crops that compliment small grains winter pastures. The small grains and introduced forage crops are being incorporated into forage crop systems that support both stocker cattle and cow-calf enterprises. The rangelands at Smith/Walker are used for range animal nutrition programs and rangeland ecology and management programs. Studies with animal grazing behavior are conducted to better understand factors affecting forage utilization and the need for supplemental feeding.
