What is poultry? Chickens, Turkeys, Ducks, and Geese are just a few examples of poultry. This project teaches members production and marketing by managing projects. Project topics include turkeys, egg production, and development from egg to chick. This project is a great way to learn about food sources and animal production, while making new friends!
You will experience the full process of selecting, feeding, and marketing poultry. You will also learn public speaking, leadership, and community service through caring for poultry too.
The Texas Youth Livestock & Agriculture provides a video series on raising poultry and showing them too.
The Texas A&M Department of Poultry Science offers the Youth Programs site to assist youth in poultry care and showing.
Livestock Judging
Grades 6-12
Livestock Judging is a great way to learn decision making and public speaking and is offered at most major stock shows. Instructions on how to raise broilers and roasters for show are available through the Texas A&M Extension. To learn more about showing poultry in other livestock shows see Youth Program section of the Texas A&M Poultry Department website.
Roundup Public Speaking
The public speaking contest is open to all 4-H categories. Speaking contests begin on the district level and continue up to Roundup. Students doing a poultry project have the opportunity to show what they’ve learned through a speech.
