Group Flood Insurance Program (GFIP) Policy Expiration – October 24, 2020

As Texas holds strong for Hurricane Season 2020, we are reminded more than ever that taking the steps to be prepared is crucial for a resilient outcome of our community. It has been reported that as few as 17% of homeowners impacted by Hurricane Harvey held a flood insurance policy. Luckily, more than 6,690 households were issued a GFIP policy that covered them for the three years after Hurricane Harvey. However, the GFIP policy which has provided flood insurance security for homeowners and renters will expire next month on October 24, 2020.

Texans who received a GFIP policy as part of their FEMA disaster assistance after Hurricane Harvey are now required to purchase a flood insurance policy by October 24, 2020. If recipients of the GFIP do not obtain a flood insurance policy, they may not be eligible for certain federal disaster assistance. It is important to state that just one inch of water can cause $25,000 of damage to a home.

If you have questions, send an email to FEMA-R6-GFIP@FEMA.DHS.GOV.
