Here Comes the Fall

By Bridgette Wilson

Although the temperature is not quite hitting the crisp coolness of October yet, for some reason I am starting to be reminded of my childhood days of the Fall festivities. Every year, my elementary school had a carnival for the entire neighborhood. It was always around Halloween. It was open season for costumes, pumpkin carving contests, cake walks, Frito pies, candy corn and bobbing for apples. Of course, back then, I wasn’t worried about calories or sugar grams. However, time has changed and now I am more conscious of my healthy habits. The good news is I have found some tips and even a recipe to share with you.

As the season approaches, I do tend to lean a bit more towards the aroma of warm pumpkin bread baking on a cool Saturday morning. Here’s a Cranberry Flax Pumpkin Bread that combines the season’s two best foods, cranberries and pumpkin. Check it out: Cranberry-flax-pumpkin-bread.

Pumpkin’s potent beta-carotene and cranberries’ anthocyanin phytochemicals are blended together with flaxseed’s protective omega-3 fats. Combined with the nutrients of cranberries and flax, this bread is a powerhouse combination of real goodness. Pumpkin is not just fun to eat and carve into a scary monster.

Want a better way to get rid of the sniffles? Did you know pumpkin is considered one of the most beneficial Fall vegetables for better immunity? Pumpkin is packed with nearly 20 percent of the recommended amount of daily vitamin C, which may help you recover from colds faster. So, go ahead. Add a bit of honey to your favorite tea and carve a little slice of pumpkin bread. It may be a trick for the cold while you enjoy the treat.
