Fresh Tips: Staying Healthy On the Road

By: Wren Fair

As Memorial Day weekend officially kicks off the summer travel season, you may be looking to take a road trip that doesn’t totally wreck your healthy eating habits. Most of us are confronted with hunger at some point on the road, and often gas stations and fast food restaurants are the only options for a hungry traveler. Though it may be tempting to throw your better judgment to the wind and spring for chips and a candy bar, you can save money and maintain healthy eating while on a road trip! The following are some tips to avoid unhealthy foods and have a junk free road trip:

1. Pack Snacks in Advance – Depending on the length of your road trip, you may want to bring some healthy snacks with you. You’d be surprised at how quickly drinks and snacks add up if you buy something every time you stop for gas or a restroom break. Fresh fruit is always a great choice, especially because the fruit at gas stations is usually unripe and unimpressive. If you have room for a small cooler, some pre-cut vegetables and hummus or yogurt could also be a great options for the road!

2. Bring a Water Bottle – While you could buy bottled water, you can save money by bringing a reusable bottle and filling it up for free at a gas station soda foundation. It’s important to stay hydrated and alert when you are driving long distances. Soda and sugary energy drinks may give you a temporary boost, but if you are looking for stamina, stick with water and avoid added sugar.

3. Move Your Body – Driving for long periods leaves your body inert and can lead to cramps. Each time you stop, try running a couple of laps around the gas station or doing jumping jacks for two to three minutes. You will feel more energized and less achy on your journey.

4. Healthy Gas Station Options – Gas stations are typically loaded with candy, chips, sodas, and hot dogs. However, there are some reasonable options for a health conscious traveler. The following are some of the best:

  • Nuts
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Cheese Stick
  • Popcorn
  • Fruit and Veggie Cups
  • Granola Bars

With all of the options listed above, be sure to read the fine print and keep an eye out for added sugars and excessive sodium!

Happy travels and Live Well wherever you go!
