Back to School: Back to Basics

by Bridget Wilson

While most of us have already returned to the “back to school” routine, the dreadful feeling of less time and more responsibilities start to creep upon us. When it comes to meal planning, time management is the key. In my last blog, I talk about healthy time management and how we need to take care of ourselves first. During the most stressful times, one of the best ways to take care of ourselves and others is to have a game plan for meal time. Creating a meal plan can not only be a great time saver, but also a cost savings and stress reliever. Knowing there is something in the fridge ready to heat up when I get home is truly a blessing after a long day dealing with conference calls and “Mom, can I…?” questions being thrown at you.

Well, put away the pizza delivery number because help is on the way. The USDA has provided a great tool called “What’s Cooking?”. These online recipes and cookbooks are free for download and easy to access. “What’s Cooking?” is an interactive tool to help with healthy meal planning, cooking, and grocery shopping.

Also, here’s some quick tips that can help you with creating your own meal plan and still have time for a fun date night or game day half time. Remember, time is valuable. So, use it wisely so that you can work smart, not hard.

Creating Your Meal Plan

  • Start with a protein that you can make in large quantity on Day 1.
  • Plan how to stretch that protein into lunch and dinner on Day 2.
  • Add your favorite whole grain (noodles, rice, bread), vegetable, fruit, and dairy items.
  • Be creative!
