Scouting Texas Cotton for Bollworm

This 2019 video by Kate Harrell and David Otradovsky in Wharton County demonstrates both the terminal inspection method and whole plant inspection method for scouting Texas cotton for bollworms. It also discusses the bollworm egg threshold that is used in areas where there is resistance to Bt cotton. The video does not discuss the “larvae per acre” method of making treatment decisions, as this method is only commonly used on the Texas High Plains.

Identification and Detection of Cotton Fleahoppers. This video briefly explains the problems and management associated with cotton fleahoppers, a common pest in cotton. This video focuses on the importance of the pest, how to identify it and how to detect the insect in cotton fields.

Determining Nodes above White Flower. Kerry Siders, Extension Agent – IPM, walks you through how to determine nodes above white flower in cotton and discusses why this is an important milestone in cotton development.

Assessing Cotton Maturity. Kerry Siders describes how to assess whether West Texas cotton is ready for harvest aid applications.

Cotton Harvest Aids Exlpained. Kerry Siders gives a brief explanation of the three types of cotton harvest aids and when they should be used.

Using the Beat Bucket. In this video, an agent is demonstrating on how to use a bucket to sample and scout for beneficials and other insects in cotton.
