David Caldwell received his Ph.D. (Veterinary Microbiology) from Texas A&M University in 1997. He joined the Department of Poultry Science at Texas A&M University as an Assistant Professor in January of 1997. Dr. Caldwell teaches an undergraduate course in avian anatomy and physiology and an undergraduate course in career exploration and professional development, which he created in 2002. Dr. Caldwell also teaches a graduate course in general immunology that is cross-listed with the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology. Since this is one of the few courses in this subject on campus, it is routinely taken by graduate students with diverse backgrounds from many difference colleges and departments. When faculty teaching reports are analyzed each year, Dr. Caldwell consistently ranks as one of the most effective teachers within the department.

As a testament to his teaching success or performance, Dr. Caldwell received the 2008 Poultry Science Association Teaching Award, currently the highest level of acknowledgement for teaching in the field of Poultry Science in the United States and Canada. Dr. Caldwell’s research interests concentrate on intestinal health and food safety microbiology in commercial poultry. Dr. Caldwell strives to maintain applicability in his research findings that extend to commercial industry and other stakeholders. Essentially all research in his laboratory involves graduate student training and research experiences for undergraduate students to introduce them to science. Teaching and extension components are integrated into research projects whenever possible.
