The following are some frequently asked questions about the MVES program:
- Who is in charge of this year’s training and who do I contact if I have questions?
This year’s program in Dallas is being hosted by Dr. Mike Merchant, Extension Entomology Specialist in Dallas, TX. You can contact Dr. Merchant by phone (972) 952-9204 or email m-merchant@tamu.edu.
- What does my registration fee cover?
Your registration fee goes toward supplies you will receive at the class as well as food (snacks, lunches and one dinner). Some of the supplies you will receive include an insect collecting kit; insect box; collection curation supplies; Extension publication packet; handouts and other items to be determined.
Your registration fee also covers lunches and one dinner, as well as snacks and drinks for the week. You will be responsible for your own lodging arrangements.
- What clothing and equipment should we bring?
Think comfortable and practical. Depending on the month of training, wear sensible outdoor-appropriate attire. Long sleeved shirt and slacks are best for tromping through tall grass and brush; comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes or hiking boots; hat; sun screen; insect repellent; flashlight or head lamp for our night-time collecting trip; and don’t forget any medication as needed.
If you have your own collecting gear, photography equipment, by all means bring it. All participants will be issued an insect collecting kit. You may also want to bring a notepad, pen, and/or pencil, close-focusing binoculars (for butterfly, dragonfly and other insect field observation).
