Winds were at the upper limit of the prescription, but initial operations proceeded normally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4\u20135 small spot fires (ranging from softball size to 2\u00d72 feet) briefly crossed West Beach Road and were quickly extinguished.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the perimeter ignition was complete, crews moved to patrol status, monitoring interior fuels as they slowly backed and burned.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not long after entering patrol status, a new 10\u00d710 foot spot fire appeared across West Beach Road, moving north with moderate to high spread rates and flame lengths of 6 feet during gusts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/westtexasrangelands\/files\/2025\/08\/picture-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2509\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/westtexasrangelands\/files\/2025\/08\/picture-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"731\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/westtexasrangelands\/files\/2025\/08\/picture-2.png 1050w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/westtexasrangelands\/files\/2025\/08\/picture-2-300x166.png 300w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/westtexasrangelands\/files\/2025\/08\/picture-2-1024x566.png 1024w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/westtexasrangelands\/files\/2025\/08\/picture-2-768x424.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 731px) 100vw, 731px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The responding resources included four ATVs, one UTV, and a Type 6 engine. Three ATV personnel anchored at the road and worked the fire\u2019s flanks using pumps and water. A UTV, carrying an operator and a passenger, positioned on the west flank directly in front of the fire head near a small dune. The operator began unspooling the hose to suppress the head fire, while the passenger started building a handline from the anchor point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the critical moment, the head fire shifted under gusty winds and quickly burned beneath the UTV, igniting its tires and part of the bed. Radio and voice warnings instructed the operator to abandon the vehicle if necessary. When the operator attempted to move the UTV, they were exposed to intense heat and sustained facial burns, despite wearing protective glasses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Incident Within an Incident (IWI) protocol was immediately activated. The injured firefighter was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, then transferred to a specialized burn center. After treatment, the firefighter was released the same evening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Key Lessons Learned from this event:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Flashy fuels are deceptive and unpredictable.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Light fuels can burn intensely and move faster than expected, even in small prescribed burn units.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid frontal assaults.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Engaging the fire head directly is a known \u201cWatch Out\u201d situation. Whenever possible, attack from the black or keep one foot in the black for safer access and egress.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anchor points matter.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Starting from a secure anchor would have minimized direct flame on the UTV and reduced extended exposure risk.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Know your equipment.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure pump pressure and volume are sufficient to suppress the head fire.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Polaris Ranger XP 1000 UTV cannot shift out of park under high RPMs\u2014a critical consideration in fast\u2011moving fire situations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-fire equipment checks and contingency planning should include practicing mounting, moving, and understanding all safety features.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Small fires carry big risk.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Serious incidents often occur during mop\u2011up or patrol stages, when complacency sets in.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>PPE saves.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The firefighter\u2019s protective safety glasses prevented eye injuries, reinforcing the value of full PPE compliance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Even well\u2011planned prescribed fires can present dynamic hazards.
