While rangeland managers welcome any rains, this combination and rapid shifts of extreme weather events from dry to wet or vice versa can lead to a hidden problem: nitrate-contaminated groundwater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b>How Does It Happen?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process called nitrate leaching can occur surprisingly quickly, with surface water penetrating to groundwater in as little as days. Here&#8217;s a breakdown of how it unfolds:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Drought Followed by Heavy Rain:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A summer drought can leave unabsorbed nitrogen fertilizer in the soil. When heavy winter rains arrive, this excess nitrogen, in the form of nitrates, rapidly moves.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nitrates Wash Deep:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The heavy rainfall then washes these nitrates through the crop&#8217;s root zone, carrying them deeper into the soil.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Groundwater Contamination: Once deep enough, these nitrates can contaminate groundwater, potentially exceeding the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency&#8217;s maximum contaminant level of 10 mg\/L.The U.S. EPA&#8217;s maximum contaminant level (MCL) for nitrate in drinking water is 10 mg\/L (10 parts per million), as measured as nitrogen (NO3-N). This level is also the maximum contaminant level goal (MCLG), meaning it&#8217;s both the target and the legal limit. The depth at which this level is measured isn&#8217;t relevant; it&#8217;s a concentration level in the water, regardless of depth.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Why Does This Matter?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For agricultural producers and introduced pasture managers, addressing nitrate contamination through sustainable practices is critical to protect water resources, ensure long-term productivity, and avoid regulatory or financial penalties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What Can We Do?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To mitigate this risk, it&#8217;s crucial to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Limit leftover nitrates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the crop&#8217;s root zone after harvest.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Utilize affordable, real-time soil nitrate monitoring tools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help manage nitrogen application effectively.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the synergy between extreme weather events and nitrate leaching is key to protecting our valuable groundwater resources.
