{"id":551,"date":"2018-09-07T13:58:17","date_gmt":"2018-09-07T18:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/?p=551"},"modified":"2018-09-07T13:58:17","modified_gmt":"2018-09-07T18:58:17","slug":"texas-cave-scorpion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/2018\/09\/07\/texas-cave-scorpion\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas cave scorpion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most people in Central Texas are well aware of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/2014\/12\/12\/striped-bark-scorpions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">striped bark scorpions<\/a>\u00a0as they can be found in the landscape and sometimes will venture indoors.\u00a0 We have another scorpion that can be found in the area, the Texas cave scorpion.<a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2018\/09\/20180906_114804.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-552 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2018\/09\/20180906_114804-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Texas cave scorpion with babies\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2018\/09\/20180906_114804-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2018\/09\/20180906_114804-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Scorpions are arachnids with eight legs and two body regions.\u00a0 \u00a0Scorpions have two pincers or claws, called pedipalps, which help them hold their prey as they eat.\u00a0 They also have a long tail with a stinger on the tip that can be used for defense or to paralyze their prey.\u00a0 Cave scorpions are dark in color and have thicker pedipalps than the striped bark scorpions.<\/p>\n<p>Texas cave scorpions do not live in the same locations as striped bark scorpions.\u00a0 They live in&#8230;.you guessed it!&#8230;.CAVES!\u00a0 They can also be found in grottos or other limestone features, so these will be in rockier areas of Central Texas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2018\/09\/20180906_121826.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-553 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2018\/09\/20180906_121826-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Texas cave scorpion with babies under UV light\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2018\/09\/20180906_121826-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2018\/09\/20180906_121826-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>So why am I rattling on about cave scorpions?\u00a0 My cave scorpion had babies yesterday!!\u00a0 They are so incredibly cute!\u00a0 I was unaware that my scorpion was even pregnant.\u00a0 Scorpions are viviparous, meaning they give birth to live young.\u00a0 The gestation period can last for 2-18 months. Considering that I did not have a male, this female had to be pregnant when I got her.\u00a0 Female scorpions exhibit maternal care and will carry the babies around on their bodies until the undergo the first molt.<\/p>\n<p>I have included an image that I took of the momma and babies under a black light so you can see that the babies don&#8217;t\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/2017\/10\/06\/glowing-scorpions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fluoresce or glow<\/a>\u00a0like the adults will.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most people in Central Texas are well aware of\u00a0striped bark scorpions\u00a0as they can be found in the landscape and sometimes will venture indoors.\u00a0 We have another scorpion that can be found in the area, the Texas cave scorpion.
