{"id":456,"date":"2017-11-03T11:43:55","date_gmt":"2017-11-03T16:43:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/?p=456"},"modified":"2017-11-03T11:43:55","modified_gmt":"2017-11-03T16:43:55","slug":"green-lynx-spiders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/2017\/11\/03\/green-lynx-spiders\/","title":{"rendered":"Green lynx spiders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcmastergardeners.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travis County Master Gardener<\/a>\u00a0volunteers were working in our demonstration garden to tidy things up.\u00a0 I always love when they come out as I get to interact with them directly with hands-on teaching moments.\u00a0 Today, I was not disappointed.\u00a0 One of them came in to see if I could tell them about a spider she found.\u00a0 You can look at the title to figure out what it was&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Green lynx spiders are large, bright green spiders with slightly elongated abdomens and spiny legs.\u00a0 They are usually found on shrubs and <a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2017\/11\/lynx-spider-eating-a-bee.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-457 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2017\/11\/lynx-spider-eating-a-bee-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Lynx spider eating a bee\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2017\/11\/lynx-spider-eating-a-bee-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2017\/11\/lynx-spider-eating-a-bee-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>low-lying vegetation where they wait for insects to come in so they can ambush them and eat them.\u00a0 Lynx spiders are generalist predators, which means that they do not specifically eat one type of food item, but a wide variety- generally whatever they can catch.\u00a0 While they are considered to be beneficial, they will eat pollinators (food is food!).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2017\/11\/Lynx-with-babies.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-458 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2017\/11\/Lynx-with-babies-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Lynx spider with spiderlings\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2017\/11\/Lynx-with-babies-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2017\/11\/Lynx-with-babies-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>The spiders that we found were mommas with babies&#8230;in this case, spiderlings.\u00a0 You can see in the photos webbing that encases part of the plant also holds and protects offspring.\u00a0 The female spider guards her spiderlings until they can fend for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Spiderlings remain near the egg sac for a little over a week and then they disperse to new locations by ballooning.\u00a0 Ballooning is where spiderlings throw up a strand of silk to catch the wind which carries them to a new location.\u00a0 I hope that I am here when this happens as I found four lynx mommas with babies (that could be about 800 spiderlings!!).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today our\u00a0Travis County Master Gardener\u00a0volunteers were working in our demonstration garden to tidy things up.\u00a0 I always love when they come out as I get to interact with them directly with hands-on teaching moments.\u00a0 Today, I was not disappointed.\u00a0 One of them came in to see if I could tell them about a spider she found.\u00a0 You can look at the title to figure out what it was&#8230;.
