Snout butterflies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you have driven, biked or walked anywhere in Central Texas recently, you most likely have noticed butterflies fluttering about. \u00a0These are not monarchs or swallowtails that we are used to seeing, but snout butterflies. \u00a0Unlike the Monarch butterflies that fly through Texas on the way to overwintering locations, these butterflies are moving to new areas in search of new food sources after depleting the food in the area they emerged. \u00a0The butterflies are also in search of mates. Snout butterfly caterpillars feed on hackberry trees, while adults seek out nectar from a variety of sources.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2016\/09\/Snout-nosed-butterfly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-319 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2016\/09\/Snout-nosed-butterfly-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"snout-nosed-butterfly\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2016\/09\/Snout-nosed-butterfly-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/files\/2016\/09\/Snout-nosed-butterfly-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>The rainfall we received in August helped the snout butterfly population by providing another flush of vegetation on hackberries for the caterpillars.<\/p>\n<p>The butterflies are brown and orange with white spots (on the tops of the wings). \u00a0The underside of the wings is brown to grey and mottled. \u00a0The two tusk-like projections from the head are where they get their name.
