{"id":244,"date":"2016-02-05T07:30:39","date_gmt":"2016-02-05T13:30:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/?p=244"},"modified":"2016-02-04T13:37:41","modified_gmt":"2016-02-04T19:37:41","slug":"zika-virus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/2016\/02\/05\/zika-virus\/","title":{"rendered":"Zika virus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I thought I would jump on the band wagon and get some information out about Zika virus. \u00a0This seems to be the latest and (not the) greatest in the news as of late. \u00a0Considering that the first case of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs.state.tx.us\/news\/releases\/20160202.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">local transmission was detected within Texas<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>in the past week, everyone needs to know about this so they can take proper precautions.<\/p>\n<p>Zika virus is transmitted by<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chikungunya\/resources\/vector-control.html\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Aedes<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i>mosquitoes<\/a>. \u00a0Currently, there is no specific treatment for the virus, nor is there a vaccine. \u00a0The best way to avoid getting Zika virus is to avoid being bitten by infected mosquitoes. \u00a0Zika virus can be contracted through the bite of an infected mosquito, through blood transfusions, through sexual contact, and from mother to child during pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>While the incubation period of Zika virus is unknown, it is thought to be from a few days to a week long. \u00a0Symptoms include fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, and headache. \u00a0Symptoms tend to be mild and last from 2-7 days. About 20% of people with Zika virus actually get ill from the virus and severe disease that requires hospitalization is uncommon. \u00a0Death due to the virus is rare.<\/p>\n<p>The<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i>Aedes<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i>mosquitoes that transmit Zika virus are also able to transmit<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/dengue\/\" target=\"_blank\">dengue<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chikungunya\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chikungunya<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a>viruses. \u00a0These mosquitoes are daytime biters, but can also bite at night. \u00a0<i>Aedes<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>mosquitoes tend to lay their eggs near or in standing water, so reducing these sources can be a way to reduce mosquito populations near your home. \u00a0More information on reducing sources<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mosquitosafari.tamu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To protect yourself from mosquito bites, wear light colored clothing that covers as much skin as possible, use insect<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mosquito.ifas.ufl.edu\/Mosquito_Repellents.htm\" target=\"_blank\">repellent<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>(read and follow label instructions), use screening on doors and windows, reduce standing water, and if sleeping outside, use mosquito netting.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on Zika virus, please see the CDC website here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/zika\/index.html\">http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/zika\/index.html<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I thought I would jump on the band wagon and get some information out about Zika virus. \u00a0This seems to be the latest and (not the) greatest in the news as of late. \u00a0Considering that the first case of\u00a0local transmission was detected within Texas\u00a0in the past week, everyone needs to know about this so they can take proper precautions.
