{"id":240,"date":"2016-01-25T12:49:36","date_gmt":"2016-01-25T18:49:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/?p=240"},"modified":"2016-01-25T12:49:36","modified_gmt":"2016-01-25T18:49:36","slug":"boxelder-bugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/urban-ipm\/2016\/01\/25\/boxelder-bugs\/","title":{"rendered":"Boxelder bugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During the winter (if you can call the weather we&#8217;re having in Texas winter&#8230;.), people may have the opportunity to see boxelder bugs emerge out of their overwintering sites on warm, sunny days. \u00a0As they can show up all of a sudden in somewhat large numbers, it can be startling.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-RydvHBifSdg\/UJ1aVMOFNSI\/AAAAAAAAAdE\/YwGamDTnvt8\/s1600\/boxelder_bug_adult.JPG\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-RydvHBifSdg\/UJ1aVMOFNSI\/AAAAAAAAAdE\/YwGamDTnvt8\/s200\/boxelder_bug_adult.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adult boxelder bug.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Boxelder bugs are dark brownish-black insects with reddish-orange markings around the edges of the thorax and wings.\u00a0 The bugs are about 1\/2 an inch long as an adult.\u00a0 Nymphs, or immatures, look similar to adults but are smaller and lack fully developed wings.\u00a0 Since the wings are not fully developed on immature stages, the red abdomen shows through.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-BJkUXnx9S-4\/UJ1aUb7nlmI\/AAAAAAAAAc8\/fku7m8ZnTD4\/s1600\/boxelder_bug_nymph.JPG\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-BJkUXnx9S-4\/UJ1aUb7nlmI\/AAAAAAAAAc8\/fku7m8ZnTD4\/s200\/boxelder_bug_nymph.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Immature boxelder bug.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While boxelder bugs typically do not cause damage to the landscape or structure, they may become a nuisance in and around homes from fall until spring.\u00a0 In the fall, adults and nymphs may gather in large numbers to move to overwintering areas.\u00a0 Boxelder bugs spend the winter in cracks and crevices in walls, around door and window casings, tree holes and in debris on the ground.\u00a0 Sometimes they will try to move indoors to overwinter.\u00a0 On warm days from fall until spring, boxelder bugs emerge from their overwintering location to warm themselves in the sun.<\/p>\n<p>Boxelder bugs feed primarily on the seed pods of female boxelder trees, but occasionally feed on other trees such as plum, cherry, apple, ash and maple.\u00a0 The insects pierce plant tissue with their mouthparts and suck juice from the plant.\u00a0 Even though the insects feed on plant juices, they usually do not cause damage to the tree.<\/p>\n<p>Removing female boxelder trees from the area may solve problems with large, repeated infestation of boxelder bugs.\u00a0 Hiding places can also be reduced or eliminated by removing debris such as boards, leaves and rocks from the area as well as sealing cracks and crevices around the home with sealant.\u00a0 If chemical treatment is desired, treat overwintering areas with chemicals containing active ingredients such as pyrethrins, cyfluthrin, bifenthrin, carbaryl or acephate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During the winter (if you can call the weather we&#8217;re having in Texas winter&#8230;.), people may have the opportunity to see boxelder bugs emerge out of their overwintering sites on warm, sunny days. \u00a0As they can show up all of a sudden in somewhat large numbers, it can be startling.
