All offer variety choices for indehiscent (non-shattering) varieties developed for large-scale mechanical harvest farming operations.\u00a0 Non-shattering sesame would better be called reduced shattering types.\u00a0 Some seed losses at the header\/cutter bar occur.\u00a0 But this is part of sesame production and is acceptable.\u00a0 Combine operators can minimize these losses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is in sharp contrast to sesame in other world regions where much sesame is harvested by hand (\u201cshocked\u201d).\u00a0 This keeps the plants standing upright to avoid seed losses from widely open capsule.\u00a0 Despite that harvest method in most of the world, sesame is the #4 oilseed crop in world production.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2022\/03\/1-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2256\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2022\/03\/1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2022\/03\/1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2022\/03\/1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2022\/03\/1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2022\/03\/1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2022\/03\/1-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fig. 1.\u00a0 A recent Sesaco sesame field near Lubbock on 40\u201d rows and furrow irrigation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sesame and Crop Insurance<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sesame has a federal crop insurance program.\u00a0 It is approved for about 90 counties in Texas and Oklahoma.\u00a0 Visit with your crop insurance agent.\u00a0 If sesame is not listed for your county, you likely can get a letter for a written agreement.\u00a0 I can help you with the letter if needed for many other Texas counties if sesame is approved for a nearby county, especially if bordering the county you would farm sesame.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What about wild hogs and sesame?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Numerous individuals including farmers, Sesaco staff, and former Texas A&amp;M AgriLife Extension agronomists Mr. Charles Stichler (Uvalde) and Dr. David Drake (San Angelo) note wild hogs do not appear to cause major issues with sesame stands and harvest.\u00a0 Wild hogs may be in the field, but damage is low.\u00a0 Wild hogs are not an issue to avoid sesame.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contractor Options and Contacts for 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All sesame in Texas is grown by contract.\u00a0 This is important.\u00a0 It preserves your privilege to grow and market sesame.\u00a0 Growers without a contract may not have access to seed.\u00a0 Secondly, there is not a cash market <em>per se<\/em>.\u00a0 Thus, without a contract you do not have any commitment from a buyer for a crop.\u00a0 The three contractors below may not need your crop, or will pay less than market value.\u00a0 Furthermore, you may not have grown a variety the contractor even wants.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To my knowledge contract prices for sesame in 2022 are the highest they have ever been.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Sesaco Corporation<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sesaco (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sesaco.com\">http:\/\/www.sesaco.com<\/a>) has offered Texas growers for more than 20 years.\u00a0 Compared to then today\u2019s Sesaco sesame varieties are a slightly shorter in maturity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sesaco is recently quoting $0.55\/lb. with potential for premiums based on clean grain, low trash, low cracks, etc.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The lead Sesaco production manager is Jared Johnson, <a href=\"mailto:jjohnson@sesaco.com\">jjohnson@sesaco.com<\/a>, (405) 531-7840.\u00a0 You can find the five regional reps for contract and grower inquiries\u2014e-mail &amp; cell phone contacts at <a href=\"https:\/\/sesaco.com\/production-team\">https:\/\/sesaco.com\/production-team<\/a>\u00a0 Ask for additional Sesaco sesame production resources.<\/li>\n<li>Sesaco research team, including general manager and also weed control expert (Dr. Connor Ferguson), <a href=\"https:\/\/sesaco.com\/research-team\">https:\/\/sesaco.com\/research-team<\/a><\/li>\n<li>In addition to their Austin headquarters, Sesaco has grain processing in Hobart, OK and owns a tahini manufacturing facility in Taylor, Michigan.<\/li>\n<li>Delivery locations in recent years included:\u00a0 Texas&#8211;Lower Rio Grande Valley, Knippa, Tynan, Miles, Stamford; Oklahoma\u2014Hobart &amp; Frederick.<\/li>\n<li>Sesaco has their own breeding program.\u00a0 Acreage has exceeded 80,000 in recent years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Equi-nom Seed &amp; Participating Contractors\/Grain Handlers<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Equi-nom is a breeding and genetics company based in Israel. \u00a0They have tested their non-shattering genetics in Texas since 2017 for both commercial varieties and breeding nurseries in the Lubbock and Uvalde areas.\u00a0 Limited commercial production began in 2018 in the Texas High Plains.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Equi-nom works with interested elevators and contractors for purchase and delivery of contracted grain using Equi-nom varieties.\u00a0 Pricing for 2022 is $0.55\/lb.\u00a0 Current elevator contractors include Garcia Grain, McAllen\/Texas Lower Rio Grande Valley, and field delivery (Octavio Garcia, (956) 279-6207).\u00a0 Several southwest and central Oklahoma buying\/delivery points include Apache, Hennessy, Goltry, Kingfisher, and Kremlin with field delivery also a likely option.\u00a0 Contact Joe Guzman (below) for other possible options in development.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Field observations of Equi-nom lines show that individual nodes on the stalk often produce two and even three flowers hence capsules per node, instead of one.\u00a0 So, the yield potential looks promising.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2022\/03\/2-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2257\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2022\/03\/2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2022\/03\/2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2022\/03\/2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2022\/03\/2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2022\/03\/2-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2022\/03\/2-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fig. 2.\u00a0 Multiple capsules per node of a commercial Equi-nom sesame variety, Lubbock.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Equi-nom production &amp; contract suggestions, Joe Guzman, Lubbock, TX, <a href=\"mailto:joeg@equi-nom.com\">joeg@equi-nom.com<\/a>, M (806) 241-6666.<\/li>\n<li>Sesame product manager Nimrod Bardanov, <u><a href=\"mailto:nimrodb@equi-nom.com\">nimrodb@equi-nom.com<\/a>, <\/u>+972 54 633 6574<\/li>\n<li>Business development manager, Chris Schupp, <a href=\"mailto:chriss@equi-nom.com\">chriss@equi-nom.com<\/a>, (515) 669-5984<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Sesajal<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sesajal has expanded their operations from Mexico to the southern U.S with headquarters in San Diego, Calif.\u00a0 They are offering $0.56\/lb. for 2022<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Field contact is agronomist Fernando Garcia, San Antonio, TX, <a href=\"mailto:fernando.garcia@sesajal.com\">fernando.garcia@sesajal.com<\/a>, (210) 306-0998<\/li>\n<li>Initial Texas contracting in 2021.\u00a0 Sesajal is looking also to partner with an interested Texas farmer to set up a large-scale demonstration farm.<\/li>\n<li>Inquire on delivery locations and options.\u00a0 Delivery on the turnrow is available.<\/li>\n<li>Sesajal has a sesame storage and processing facility under construction at Hondo, Texas (west of San Antonio, TX).\u00a0 It will be operational by summer 2022.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Additional Contract Considerations<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are these contracts waived if you have storm or drought losses?\u00a0 For lesser acreage crops like sesame they usually are (\u2018act of nature\u2019).<\/li>\n<li>Is the price the same for dryland and irrigated acres?<\/li>\n<li>Usually there are small premiums (rather than discounts) for good color, low broken seed, clean grain, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Are there provisions or prohibitions in using glyphosate (Roundup) as a harvest aid (more common in South Texas)??<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Some Sesame Basics<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here are some key considerations for sesame production in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sesame is not for your weedy ground.\u00a0 There are labels for yellow herbicides (Treflan, Sonalan, Prowl) and grasses after emergence.\u00a0 There is an \u201cindemnified\u201d label from Syngenta for use of Dual Magnum (<em>s<\/em>-metolachlor) where the farmer agrees to accept all risk (rates are lower than other crops).\u00a0 Starting clean is important as sesame is not competitive with weeds for the first five weeks or so after emergence.<\/li>\n<li>Growers report that sesame is sensitive to glyphosate and 2,4-D drift and especially to dicamba.<\/li>\n<li>Nitrogen fertility should not be neglected for a sesame crop.<\/li>\n<li>Sesame is suitable for dryland production in Texas in lower rainfall areas like the High Plains, Rolling Plains, Concho Valley, and Lower Rio Grande Valley.\u00a0 When irrigated modest amounts of irrigation up to 8\u201d can be an economic \u2018sweet spot\u2019 for production.<\/li>\n<li>Sesame is harvested with conventional headers and grain combines.\u00a0 Plan on some time to help get your settings optimized and learn how to best get the crop fed onto the header.\u00a0 Contractors recognize that helping growers set their combines properly the first time you ever harvest sesame is important for ensuring grower success and optimizing the quality of the crop delivered (little trash, minimal seed breakage).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For further information see the Texas A&amp;M AgriLife sesame primer online\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/lubbock.tamu.edu\/sesame\/\">https:\/\/lubbock.tamu.edu\/sesame\/<\/a> and consult your contractor.\u00a0 The information there is primarily for the Texas Rolling &amp;
