{"id":1763,"date":"2019-07-03T16:18:30","date_gmt":"2019-07-03T16:18:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/?p=1763"},"modified":"2019-07-03T16:18:30","modified_gmt":"2019-07-03T16:18:30","slug":"cotton-blue-disease-a-virus-disease-not-in-texas-so-far","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/2019\/07\/03\/cotton-blue-disease-a-virus-disease-not-in-texas-so-far\/","title":{"rendered":"Cotton Blue Disease, A Virus Disease Not in Texas, So Far"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A new virus disease of cotton found so far in several southeastern US states has attracted a lot of attention lately.\u00a0 This is the \u201ccotton blue disease\u201d, which is caused by the cotton leaf roll dwarf virus.\u00a0 Symptoms are seen in the new growth following virus infection and include stunting, blistering or crinkling of leaves (Figure 1), and downward cupping of leaves (Figure 2).\u00a0 Other symptoms can include reddening, shortened internodes, upward cupping of leaves and abnormal top growth.\u00a0 Plants may also exhibit a green-blue leaf color, for which the disease is named.\u00a0 The virus can cause boll drop and although yield losses have been associated with it, there are also examples of no obvious effect on yield.\u00a0 To further confuse recognition of this disease, some symptoms may resemble phenoxy herbicide injury.<\/p>\n<p>The virus is transmitted by aphids and additional hosts, such as henbit and pigweed, have been identified in the United States.\u00a0 Persistence of the virus in regrowth cotton is also possible.<\/p>\n<p>The virus occurs on four other continents where cotton is grown.\u00a0 In the United States, it was first identified in Alabama in 2017 and was subsequently found in Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and South Carolina.\u00a0 This is still a relatively new disease in the United States and we are and will be continually learning new things about it as each season progresses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2019\/07\/t1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1764 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2019\/07\/t1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2019\/07\/t1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2019\/07\/t1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2019\/07\/t1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2019\/07\/t1.jpg 1213w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Figure 1.\u00a0 Blistering symptom in new leaf growth associated with cotton leaf roll dwarf virus.\u00a0 Photo courtesy of Dr. Judith K.
