{"id":1730,"date":"2019-06-06T14:40:05","date_gmt":"2019-06-06T14:40:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/?p=1730"},"modified":"2019-06-06T14:40:05","modified_gmt":"2019-06-06T14:40:05","slug":"mid-to-late-season-weed-control-options-for-peanut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/2019\/06\/06\/mid-to-late-season-weed-control-options-for-peanut\/","title":{"rendered":"Mid- to Late-Season Weed Control Options for Peanut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Weed pressure seems higher this season due to better than average soil moisture.\u00a0 Herbicides applied preplant and at planting have been effective, but new weed flushes following rainfall or irrigation are likely as soil applied herbicides are dissipating.\u00a0 Herbicides applied at early-postemergence that do not have soil activity are also prone to allow new weed flushes.\u00a0 In other words, good early season weed control may need some attention because previously applied herbicides have dissipated over time.\u00a0 So what options do we have from now to early peg stage?<\/p>\n<p>There has been some good discussion about herbicides applied to peanuts in bloom to early peg and the potential for increased injury.\u00a0 We have looked at this timing issue with several herbicides, including <strong>imazapic<\/strong> (e.g., Cadre and other generics), <strong>imazethapyr<\/strong> (e.g., Pursuit and other generics), <strong>acifluorfen<\/strong> (e.g., Ultra Blazer and other generics), <strong>2,4-DB<\/strong> (e.g., Butyrac and other generics), and <strong>lactofen<\/strong> (e.g., Cobra and other generics), and have not seen a problem when these herbicides are applied at that time during the growing season.\u00a0 Pay attention to the preharvest interval (PHI) restriction (Table 1). \u00a0Descriptions of these herbicides were discussed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/2019\/05\/08\/early-season-weed-control-operations-for-peanut\/\">May article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Table 1. Preharvest intervals<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 0%; height: 192px;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 48px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 48px; text-align: center;\" width=\"183\"><strong>Herbicide product name<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 48px; text-align: center;\" width=\"182\"><strong>Preharvest Interval (PHI)<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 24px; text-align: center;\" width=\"183\">Cadre<\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 24px; text-align: center;\" width=\"182\">90 days<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 24px; text-align: center;\" width=\"183\">Pursuit<\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 24px; text-align: center;\" width=\"182\">85 days<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 24px; text-align: center;\" width=\"183\">Ultra Blazer<\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 24px; text-align: center;\" width=\"182\">75 days<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 24px; text-align: center;\" width=\"183\">2,4-DB<\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 24px; text-align: center;\" width=\"182\">60 days<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 24px; text-align: center;\" width=\"183\">Basagran<\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 24px; text-align: center;\" width=\"182\">50 days for grazing<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 24px; text-align: center;\" width=\"183\">Cobra<\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 24px; text-align: center;\" width=\"182\">45 days<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The only herbicide that was not discussed in the May article was <strong>2,4-DB<\/strong>.\u00a0 Note that <strong>2,4-DB<\/strong> is different from <strong>2,4-D<\/strong>, which is not labeled for use in peanut.\u00a0 <strong>2,4-D<\/strong> may cause plant death and yield loss, which is dependent on rate and stage of growth at application.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2,4-DB<\/strong> (e.g., Butyrac 175, Butyrac 200, and other generics) may be used in peanut at various rates (13 to 28 oz\/ac) depending on the formulation.\u00a0 Applications should be made between 2 to 12 weeks after planting.\u00a0 Do not apply to peanuts suffering from lack of moisture.\u00a0 The second application should not be made later than the late bloom stage of peanut and do not apply later than 100 days after planting or within 60 days of harvest.\u00a0 <strong>2,4-DB<\/strong> has good activity on several annual broadleaf weeds including morningglory, smellmelon, and sunflower.\u00a0 This herbicide is also a good option on silverleaf nightshade (whiteweed).\u00a0 The use of crop oil with <strong>2,4-DB<\/strong> will increase herbicide activity; however, crop oil will enhance phenoxy-type injury (Figure 1) to peanut and cause plants to \u2018lay-down\u2019 for 24 to 48 hours.\u00a0 Plants will recover quickly and research suggests this injury will not result in yield losses at the end of the season (Table 2).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2019\/06\/kimura-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1732 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2019\/06\/kimura-1-279x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2019\/06\/kimura-1-279x300.png 279w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2019\/06\/kimura-1.png 344w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 279px) 100vw, 279px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Figure 1. 2,4-DB leaf strapping (Source: Prostko et al. 1999).<\/p>\n<p>Table 2.
