{"id":1090,"date":"2017-05-05T18:48:39","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T18:48:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/?p=1090"},"modified":"2017-05-05T18:55:58","modified_gmt":"2017-05-05T18:55:58","slug":"varying-tolerances-to-liberty-applications-in-cotton-varieties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/2017\/05\/05\/varying-tolerances-to-liberty-applications-in-cotton-varieties\/","title":{"rendered":"Varying Tolerances to Liberty Applications in Cotton Varieties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Gaylon Morgan and\u00a0and Josh McGinty.<\/p>\n<p>There are more herbicide tolerant (HT) traits on the market than ever before and with more to come in the future.\u00a0 These HT traits provide new opportunities for weed management, but growers are going to have to remain diligent on the various HT traits and in which varieties these traits are included.\u00a0 The previous article (<a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/2017\/02\/22\/best-management-practices-for-auxin-tolerant-cotton-technologies-current-12017\/\">https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/2017\/02\/22\/best-management-practices-for-auxin-tolerant-cotton-technologies-current-12017\/<\/a>) discussed the differences and similarities in the various dicamba products (XtendiMax\u00ae, Engenia\u2122, and FeXapan\u2122) and Enlist Duo\u00ae.\u00a0\u00a0 One factor that was discussed in this article is the cotton variety tolerance to glufosinate (Liberty\u00ae by Bayer, Cheetah\u2122 by NuFarm, or Kong by Solera) in GlyTol\u00ae LibertyLink\u00ae cotton varieties, XtendFlex\u00ae cotton varieties, and Widestrike\u00ae cotton varieties.<\/p>\n<p>From trials conducted in the Southeastern CottonBelt and grower observations in Texas, there can be varying levels of crop injury from glufosinate, when applied to the different HT trait varieties.\u00a0 Glufosinate is the most effective for weed control when the weeds are actively growing (lush) and humidity is high.\u00a0 Under these same conditions, the potential for herbicide injury to cotton is also increased.\u00a0 This has been observed in South and East Texas, but no research has been conducted to validate the HT trait differences.\u00a0 However, in the Southeastern US, Dr. Stanley Culpepper and colleagues have conducted such research.\u00a0 Below is a summary of some of the research.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 28 trials were conducted in the Southeastern states.\u00a0 Of the 28 trials, <strong><u>only 3<\/u><\/strong> trials exceeded 15% crop injury from glufosinate.\u00a0 These 3 trials occurred under great cotton growing conditions and with very high humidity, and were coined \u201cextreme environment for injury\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Under the extreme environment for injury, the table below shows differences in tolerances to Liberty applications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Percent Visual Cotton Injury at 3 Days After Treatment in TyTy, GA in 2015. \u00a0Data provided by Dr. Stanley Culpepper, University of Georgia.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<table class=\" aligncenter\" style=\"width: 542px; Warrant = 48 oz\/a<\/p>\n<p>**\u00a0 Herbicides were applied at 15 gpa and no adjuvants were added<\/p>\n<p>The level of herbicide tolerance to glufosinate can vary between the different herbicide tolerant traits and varieties with the LibertyLink trait.\u00a0 Why the differences in tolerance in varieties with the LibertyLink traits?\u00a0 LibertyLink is a Bayer Crop Science patented trait.\u00a0 It is our understanding that the LibertyLink trait is the same for GlyTol LibertyLink varieties and the XtendFlex varieties.\u00a0 The XtendFlex varieties use a different trait introgression process which may occasionally result in less tolerance to Liberty; however, the XtendFlex varieties must still exhibit a very high tolerance to Liberty in order to be approved as LibertyLink by Bayer Crop Science.\u00a0\u00a0 Cotton varieties with the Widestrike insect protection trait (WRF) have two copies of the <em>pat <\/em>gene, which provides partial tolerance to field rates of glufosinate, though less than varieties with the LibertyLink trait.\u00a0 Varieties with the WideStrike 3 traits, including Enlist traits (W3FE), express three copies of the <em>pat <\/em>gene and provide even greater tolerance to glufosinate.\u00a0 Data from Dr. Culpepper indicates glufosinate tolerance is slightly less that GlyTol LibertyLink varieties, but slightly better tolerance than the XtendFlex varieties tested.<\/p>\n<p>When crop injury is observed on cotton plants, the response to glufosinate usually manifests itself as small necrotic spots on the leaves.\u00a0 In Figure 1 below, this response can be seen on several varieties with varying trait packages.\u00a0 Glufosinate is not translocated in the plant and thus the necrotic injury will only be observed on the leaves present at application and subsequent leaves will be healthy.\u00a0 With low levels of glufosinate injury (&lt;15%), cotton plants easily grow through the injury and little (if any) yield loss would be expected to occur.<\/p>\n<p>In summary, under the extreme environmental conditions of lush growing conditions and high humidity, some differences may be observed among trait packages in their tolerance to glufosinate.\u00a0 Additionally, as the number of tankmix partners with Liberty increase, the potential for crop injury increases for all varieties and traits.\u00a0 Occasionally, greater injury may be observed on WideStrike and XtendFlex varieties, but is unlikely to affect yield.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1091\" style=\"width: 556px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2017\/05\/Morgan-Pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1091\" class=\"wp-image-1091 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2017\/05\/Morgan-Pic-546x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"546\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2017\/05\/Morgan-Pic-546x1024.jpg 546w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2017\/05\/Morgan-Pic-160x300.jpg 160w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2017\/05\/Morgan-Pic-768x1439.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasrowcrops\/files\/2017\/05\/Morgan-Pic.jpg 999w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 546px) 100vw, 546px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 1.
