{"id":4188,"date":"2016-08-05T01:25:04","date_gmt":"2016-08-05T06:25:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/?p=4188"},"modified":"2026-04-17T15:27:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T20:27:21","slug":"august-5-2016-weekly-round","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/2016\/08\/05\/august-5-2016-weekly-round\/","title":{"rendered":"August 5, 2016 Weekly Round Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I kicked off this week bright and early on Monday morning in College Station where I coordinated the Landowner Issues Session at the TAMU Beef Cattle Short Course. \u00a0It is a great event and we had a huge turn out and great audience questions for our session. \u00a0In addition to welcoming those of you joining the blog from BCSC, I also want to give a huge thanks to my co-presenters, Luke Ellis and James Decker, who did absolutely outstanding presentations!<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, I presented a webinar for the TAMU Range and Eco Science Management Department on Ranching in Oil and Gas Country. \u00a0I&#8217;ll get the recording of that presentation posted in the next week or so. \u00a0Welcome to those of you new to the blog from that webinar!<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the ag law stories in the news this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>President Obama signs GMO labeling bill.<\/strong> \u00a0President Obama has signed the compromise bill passed by Congress requiring federal labeling standards for foods containing genetically modified ingredients. \u00a0The bill [read in full <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agriculture.senate.gov\/ag-biotech-compromise-proposal\">here<\/a>] gives authority to develop the labeling scheme to the USDA, which will have two years to write regulations. \u00a0One thing the bill clearly does immediately is pre-empt (make null and void) state and local GMO labeling laws, such as the one in Vermont. \u00a0[Read article <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/obama-signs-bill-mandating-gmo-labeling\/story?id=41004057\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lesser Prairie Chicken issue far from over.<\/strong> \u00a0You may recall from <a href=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/2015\/11\/06\/court-vacates-lesser-prairie-chicken-listing-under-endangered-species-act\/\">this blog post<\/a> that the Lesser Prairie Chicken was removed from the Endangered Species Act list after a Texas federal court found that the US Fish and Wildlife Service failed to properly consider certain evidence when listing the Lesser Prairie Chicken as &#8220;threatened&#8221; under the Endangered Species Act. \u00a0As I predicted then, the story is far from over. \u00a0The USFWS issued a press release stating that they are in the process of undertaking a new review to determine if the bird should be listed. \u00a0Several lawmakers, concerned with this press release, have sent a letter to USFWS questioning their intention. \u00a0Stay tuned&#8230; [Read article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oklahomafarmreport.com\/wire\/news\/2016\/07\/00240_LawmakersAskAshe07303016_105321.php#.V6NtnfkrLmF\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/files\/2013\/10\/1395069_10200902914282943_1621645711_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-779\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/files\/2013\/10\/1395069_10200902914282943_1621645711_n.jpg\" alt=\"1395069_10200902914282943_1621645711_n\" width=\"451\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/files\/2013\/10\/1395069_10200902914282943_1621645711_n.jpg 960w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/files\/2013\/10\/1395069_10200902914282943_1621645711_n-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 451px) 100vw, 451px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Texas city fighting oil and gas waste disposal site.<\/strong> \u00a0Nordheim citizens is continuing to oppose a oil and gas waste disposal site planned for their area. \u00a0The site has been approved&#8211;over objections by city residents&#8211;by the Texas Railroad Commission. \u00a0The citizens have now taken the fight to the courthouse, filing suit in Travis County district court, claiming that the RRC erred in approving the project. \u00a0Although approved by the RRC, at least one commissioner, Ryan Sitton, said he did not like the site, but he had to approve becuase agency experts determined that safeguards were in place to protect groundwater and they could not evaluate any other concerns. \u00a0The case will be difficult to win, as great deference is given to an agency decision like that of the RRC. \u00a0[Read article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2016\/08\/02\/eagle-ford-tiny-nordheim-keeps-battling-drilling-w\/\">here.<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I kicked off this week bright and early on Monday morning in College Station where I coordinated the Landowner Issues Session at the TAMU Beef Cattle Short Course. \u00a0It is a great event and we had a huge turn out and great audience questions for our session. \u00a0In addition to welcoming those of you joining the blog from BCSC, I also want to give a huge thanks to my co-presenters, Luke Ellis and James Decker, who did absolutely outstanding presentations!
