{"id":4142,"date":"2016-07-22T01:02:50","date_gmt":"2016-07-22T06:02:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/?p=4142"},"modified":"2026-04-17T15:27:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T20:27:21","slug":"july-22-2016-weekly-round","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/2016\/07\/22\/july-22-2016-weekly-round\/","title":{"rendered":"July 22, 2016 Weekly Round Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Happy Friday! \u00a0This week I enjoyed the opportunity to travel to Floydata and visit with producers at their ag field day about one of my favorite things&#8230;agricultural law hot topics. \u00a0To those of you joining from that meeting, welcome! \u00a0Here are some of the major ag law stories in the news this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>* Congress Passes GMO Labeling Law.<\/strong> \u00a0Last week, Congress passed a federal law that will impose federal standards on the labeling of foods made with genetically modified ingredients. \u00a0[Read bill text <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.senate.gov\/ag-biotech-compromise-proposal\">here<\/a>.] \u00a0The law will pre-empt state-level measures to do the same, such as the labeling law passed by Vermont that became effective earlier this month. \u00a0The bill is now on the desk of President Obama, who is expected to sign. New Mexico Litigation.<\/strong> \u00a0As I mentioned last week, the Special Master in the Supreme Court case involving a dispute between Texas and New Mexico. \u00a0I was able to locate a copy of the lengthy report. \u00a0[Read entire report here.] \u00a0The Special Master recommends that the Court deny New Mexico&#8217;s Motion to Dismiss, and would find that Texas has stated a claim based upon the unambiguous language of the Compact, the purpose of the Compact, and the Equitable Apportionment Doctrine. \u00a0Further, the report recommends\u00a0that while the United States should be permitted to intervene as a party to the case, motions to intervene filed by the Elephant Butte Irrigation District and the El Paso County Water Improvement District No. 1 should be denied. \u00a0The Las Cruces-Sun News recently published a lengthy article discussing the ligation, current status, and possible impacts. \u00a0[Read article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/story\/news\/local\/water\/2016\/07\/16\/do-ana-county-water-use-could-see-big-impacts-draft-rulings\/87087058\/\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p><strong>* Free Teleconference &#8220;<em>United States Corps of Engineers v.
