{"id":3220,"date":"2015-07-24T11:16:44","date_gmt":"2015-07-24T16:16:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/?p=3220"},"modified":"2026-04-17T15:29:47","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T20:29:47","slug":"july-24-2015-weekly-round-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/2015\/07\/24\/july-24-2015-weekly-round-up\/","title":{"rendered":"July 24, 2015 Weekly Round Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been a beautiful week here in the Texas Panhandle! \u00a0Here are some ag law stories making headlines this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>* Missouri Suing USDA Over Crop Insurance Deadline. <\/strong>\u00a0On Wednesday, Missouri filed suit against the USDA, seeking the delay of a reporting deadline related to crop insurance. [To view the Complaint, <a href=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/files\/2015\/07\/click-here.1.pdf\">click here.<\/a>] Due to recent rains and flooding, it is estimated that 60% of Missouri farmers did not have their crop planted by the deadline, which is required in order to file acreage reports necessary to obtain crop insurance. \u00a0Prior to filing suit, Governor Jay Nixon requested that USDA extend the deadline, but his request was denied. \u00a0According to reports, the lawsuit seeks only an additional 15 days to allow farmers to file their acreage reports. \u00a0Missouri argues that the USDA&#8217;s deadline is arbitrary and capricious, and therefore improper under federal law.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>[Read article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news-leader.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2015\/07\/16\/missouri-sues-usda-crop-insurance\/30216467\/\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p><strong>* Shoe Is on the Other Foot for PETA. <\/strong>\u00a0We&#8217;ve seen numerous &#8220;undercover investigations&#8221; by PETA and other activist groups in recent years whereby PETA members obtain employment on ag operations. \u00a0Oftentimes, the activists allegedly gain employment through false information, alter videos, fail to timely report animal abuse, and incite illegal and harmful actions by other employees. \u00a0This week, we&#8217;ve seen the shoe on the other foot. \u00a0A Sea World employee went undercover to pose as a PETA activist. \u00a0The employee allegedly alerted law enforcement to planned PETA rallies and tried to incite other PETA members to illegal actions. \u00a0Not surprisingly, PETA was not impressed. \u00a0[Read article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2015\/07\/19\/424173300\/peta-says-undercover-seaworld-employee-posed-as-animal-rights-activist\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p><strong>* \u00a0Farmers Prefer Older Tractors with Less Technology?<\/strong>\u00a0 Todd Janzen wrote a great blog post this week asking why sales of new farm equipment are down while prices for good used equipment are up. \u00a0Certainly high prices of new machinery is part of the answer, but Janzen asks whether farmers might actually prefer the older tractors with less technology? \u00a0Thought provoking for sure. \u00a0[Read blog post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janzenaglaw.com\/2015\/07\/are-farmers-hitting-brakes-on-new.html\">here<\/a>.] \u00a0And, so you can see where my family falls on the spectrum, here is the tractor my father gave my husband and I for Mother&#8217;s Day.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3226\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/files\/2015\/07\/tractor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3226\" class=\"wp-image-3226\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/files\/2015\/07\/tractor-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/files\/2015\/07\/tractor-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/files\/2015\/07\/tractor-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/files\/2015\/07\/tractor.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3226\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1970&#8217;s model industrial John Deere. Runs like a champ.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>* Checklist for Reviewing Your Estate Plan.<\/strong> \u00a0Market Watch recently published a 14-point checklist to use when reviewing (or creating) an estate plan. \u00a0[Read article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/review-your-estate-plan-against-this-14-point-checklist-2015-07-20\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p><strong>* \u00a0Could Your Child&#8217;s Spouses Second Husband Inherit the Farm?<\/strong>\u00a0 It&#8217;s not as far fetched as you might think.
