\u00a0Stay tuned for some blog updates on what we discussed coming soon.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some major ag law stories in the news this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>* \u00a0EPA Releases Final WOTUS Rule.<\/strong>\u00a0 The EPA has, after allegedly considering public comment on their proposed rule, published their final &#8220;waters of the United States&#8221; rule this week. \u00a0Unfortunately, yet not surprisingly, the final rule is not drastically different than the proposed rule that caused the agricultural industry so much heartburn. \u00a0Remember, this rule is extremely important because it defines the scope of federal jurisdiction under the Clean Water Act. \u00a0You can read the final rule <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.epa.gov\/sites\/production\/files\/2015-05\/documents\/clean_water_rule_part_230_3.pdf\">here<\/a>. \u00a0There are many comments on the proposed rule, including one from the ranking member on the US House Ag Committee, which you can find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oklahomafarmreport.com\/wire\/news\/2015\/05\/09670_PetersonReactWOTUS052715_113651.php#.VWhqWc9Vikp\">here<\/a>. \u00a0To further add to the drama, the US House of Representatives recently passed a bill to stop the EPA&#8217;s rule and essentially send the agency back to the drawing board. \u00a0[Read article <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/floor-action\/house\/241857-house-passes-bill-to-stop-epa-water-rule\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p><strong>*NYT Article Blames Ag for California Drought.<\/strong>\u00a0 The New York Times has joined in the popular activity of attacking California agriculture in the midst of the state&#8217;s drought. \u00a0Rather than recognizing the hard work of the California agricultural industry to feed millions across the world, the article instead lists numerous California crops as &#8220;water guzzlers&#8221; and suggests that production should cease. \u00a0I am not sure what better use the authors believe water can be put to than producing food for the world. \u00a0[Read article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2015\/05\/21\/us\/your-contribution-to-the-california-drought.html?_r=2\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p><strong>* \u00a010 Questions to Ask Before Adding the Next Generation to the Farm.<\/strong> \u00a0Delta Farm Press ran an article discussing an issue important to any family-owned business, especially agriculture: \u00a0transitioning ownership from one generation to the next. \u00a0The article offers 10 simple questions to consider before making this transition. \u00a0[Read article <a href=\"http:\/\/deltafarmpress.com\/rice\/10-questions-adding-next-generation-farm?NL=DFP-01&amp;Issue=DFP-01_20150511_DFP-01_334&amp;sfvc4enews=42&amp;cl=article_1&amp;utm_rid=CPG02000000698080&amp;utm_campaign=3965&amp;utm_medium=email\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/files\/2015\/03\/dairy-land-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2730 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/files\/2015\/03\/dairy-land-3-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"dairy land 3\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/files\/2015\/03\/dairy-land-3-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/files\/2015\/03\/dairy-land-3-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/texasaglaw\/files\/2015\/03\/dairy-land-3.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>* \u00a0Avoid Estate Planning &#8220;Gotchas.&#8221;<\/strong> \u00a0Wealth Management published a great article discussing the importance of having an estate plan and offering tips for getting one in order. \u00a0I enjoyed the article and thought that many of the suggestions offered were excellent. \u00a0[Read article <a href=\"http:\/\/wealthmanagement.com\/kansas-missouri-estate-planning\/avoiding-estate-planning-gotchas\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week I spent a couple of days in Lubbock at the 9th Annual John Huffaker Agricultural Law Course, held on campus at the Texas Tech School of Law. \u00a0As always, it was a fantastic conference. \u00a0Kudos to organizers David Waggoner and Trace Blair for their hard work. \u00a0All ag attorneys should try to attend next year!
