This has been a busy week!\u00a0 On Monday evening, I was in Wheeler, Texas giving a presentation on estate and\u00a0succession planning.\u00a0 County Agent Dale Dunlap invited me to come and I was impressed with the great questions from the audience on these important issues.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, I headed for Boston for the Universities Council on Water Resources Conference at Tufts, University.\u00a0 I was fortunate to present on two panels at the conference.\u00a0 On Tuesday, I spoke along with Dr. Ari Michelsen of Texas A&M and Dr. Brian Hurd of New Mexico State University on the potential impacts of the Texas v. New Mexico and Colorado Supreme Court lawsuit.\u00a0 On Wednesday afternoon, I was part of the “Water Wars” session and discussed various interstate water disputes along with Jesse Richardson of West Virginia University, Drew Kershen of the University of Oklahoma, and Jim Bradbury, a practicing attorney in Ft. Worth.\u00a0 It was a great conference and I enjoyed the chance to participate.<\/p>\n

Water Wars presentation<\/p><\/div>\n

Here are some of the ag law stories in the news this week.<\/p>\n

* Texas Water Development Board Releases Draft Rules. <\/strong>The Texas Water Development Board has unveiled its draft rules for awarding SWIFT funding.\u00a0 The SWIFT fund, approved by voters last November, will provide loans\u00a0for water projects across the state.\u00a0 Pursuant to statute, at least 10% of funds must be awarded in rural areas and 15% for conservation and reuse projects.\u00a0 The draft rules propose a point based system for evaluating projects.\u00a0Public comment will be solicited on the draft rules until September 1, 2014, including several public meetings across the state.\u00a0 [Read article here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n

*Q&A\u00a0with Water Attorney Martin Rochelle.<\/strong>\u00a0 In this article, Martin Rochelle\u00a0answers a series of questions regarding Texas\u00a0water law, including how he believes policy decisions should be made, major issues coming across his desk, and the state of groundwater law.\u00a0 [Read article here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n

* Ranching with Endangered Species.<\/strong>\u00a0 Progressive Cattleman ran an interesting article this month on ranching with endangered species.\u00a0 This is a timely discussion, particularly given the recent listing of the lesser prairie chicken as threatened and New Mexico jumping mouse as endangered.\u00a0 [Read article here<\/a>.]\u00a0 In the next couple of weeks, I will be preparing a blog on the basics of the Endangered Species Act, so stay tuned for that information.<\/p>\n

* Does Your Farm Have Adequate Liability Insurance?<\/strong>\u00a0 The Southeast Farm Press published an article addressing this critically important question.\u00a0 The article outlines various types of insurance and provides information about each of them.\u00a0 [Read article here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n
