The lease involves over 271,000 acres of submerged state land located in Jefferson, Chambers, and Galveston Counties.\u00a0 Proceeds from the agreement will benefit the Texas Permanent School Fund. [Read Press Release <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glo.texas.gov\/the-glo\/news\/press-releases\/2024\/october\/texas-land-commissioner-buckingham-secures-largest-carbon-sequestration-lease-in-the-united-states.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.]<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">*<\/span><\/b><strong>Judge rules Idaho forfeiture laws apply to United States as water right holder<\/strong><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 The US District Court for the District of Idaho has sided with the State of Idaho in a dispute with the federal government over water rights.\u00a0 Although the court found that some state water laws were unconstitutional as they applied only to the federal government, the statute providing that unused rights are forfeited after five years of non-use was constitutional and applicable to the United States.\u00a0 [Read Opinion <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fingfx.thomsonreuters.com\/gfx\/legaldocs\/movaqaaamva\/08292024idaho.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and article <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/government\/us-loses-bid-block-idaho-water-rights-forfeiture-laws-2024-08-29\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.]<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>*Judge allows environmental group to intervene in groundwater battle in Hays County<\/strong><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A federal judge has granted the Trinity Edwards Springs Protection Association (TESPA)\u2019s Motion to Intervene in a lawsuit pitting the Hays Trinity Aquifer Conservation District against water supplier Aqua Texas. At issue in the case are allegations by the District that Aqua Texas over pumped the groundwater and owes over $440,000 in fines.
