week.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>*\u00a0 Texas Supreme Court Orders TransCanada Response to Appeal.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 The Texas Supreme Court has ordered TransCanada to respond for a petition for review\u00a0filed by\u00a0Texas landowner Julia Trigg Crawford.\u00a0 Trigg Crawford has appealed\u00a0the trial court decision (affirmed by the\u00a0appellate court) challenging the ability of TransCanada to use\u00a0the power of eminent domain to take a portion of her 600 acre family farm near Pairs, TX, for the Keystone XL pipeline.\u00a0\u00a0Importantly, and contrary to what some reports have claimed, the Supreme Court has issued no decision in the case, but has merely requested the TransCanada\u00a0respond to Ms.\u00a0Trigg Crawford&#8217;s request that the Supreme Court hear her appeal.\u00a0 \u00a0[Read article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/197429631\/Texas-Supreme-Court-Ruling-in-Favor-of-Landowner\">here.<\/a>]<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>* Arizona Supreme Court Rules Against Environmental Groups.<\/strong>\u00a0 The Arizona Supreme Court issued a ruling against environmental groups claiming a constitutional right to obtain grazing leases on state land when they were the lowest bidder.\u00a0 The Court, in affirming the decision of the appellate court, did not go into additional rationale for its decision.\u00a0 The controversy arose when WildEarth Guardians offered to pay $.40 per acre more than ranchers Galyn and Roxanne Knight.\u00a0 The Land Department awarded the lease to the Knights.\u00a0 According to attorney Tim Hogan, the Land Department never opened WildEarth Guardian&#8217;s bid, finding instead that ranchers would be better land stewards.\u00a0 [Read article <a 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><strong>*\u00a0 New York City Mayor-Elect Seeks To Ban Horse Carriages.<\/strong>\u00a0 Bill de Blasio, the mayor-elect of New York City, has announced that he intends to ban horse-drawn carriages, claiming that they are inhumane.\u00a0 De Blasio plans to replace the\u00a0horse-drawn carriages with antique cars.\u00a0 The proposed law will have to be approved by the\u00a0City Council before going into effect.\u00a0\u00a0Carriage drivers have vowed to fight this measure.\u00a0 [Read articles <a Producers.\u00a0<\/strong> On day after Smithfield announced\u00a0changes regarding\u00a0the use of gestation crates, Tyson\u00a0Foods, the\u00a0second largest pork producer in the US, also announced sweeping changes for producers.\u00a0\u00a0These changes include\u00a0an expansion of third-party audits,\u00a0use of\u00a0video monitoring to\u00a0decrease\u00a0biosecurity\u00a0risks, the end of utilizing\u00a0blunt force trauma to euthanize hogs, the development and use of pain mitigation during tail docking and castration, and improved housing systems.\u00a0\u00a0[Read article <a previously reported on this blog,\u00a0Jensen Farms, the cantaloupe operation where listeria contaminated the product causing several deaths and illnesses across the country, filed suit against PrimusLabs, the third party auditor that gave the farm a passing grade just weeks before the outbreak.\u00a0 The case was subsequently signed over to the victims, meaning\u00a0any recovery would go to them, rather than to Jensen Farms.\u00a0 Primus Farms has now filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit,\u00a0placing fault on the Jensen brothers and their distributer, rather than on the audit company.
