Now, on to the point of this post.\u00a0 On this final day of 2013,\u00a0we wanted to take a look back on the most popular ag law stories this year.<\/p>\n

\"2014\"<\/a><\/p>\n

1.\u00a0 Water.\u00a0<\/strong> I suspect that water issues will continue to be the top agriculture story and concern for many years to come.\u00a0 This blog has written several water-related posts this year, including our series on Texas Water Wars<\/a>, which looked at disputes between Texas and its neighboring states and Mexico.\u00a0 This blog also undertook to provide basic information about Texas water law as it applies to groundwater<\/a> and surface water<\/a>.\u00a0 We also closely followed numerous ongoing controversies impacting Texas\u00a0water, including the San Antonio Court of Appeals’ decision in Bragg v. EAA<\/em><\/a>, which found the EAA denial of\u00a0irrigation permits to a pecan farmer to be a taking.\u00a0 In the upcoming year, we intend to continue providing information about basic water laws, as well as keeping you up to date on any current issues related to water.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0 AQHA Cloning Litigation.<\/strong>\u00a0 Each time that the cloning lawsuit is discussed on this blog, we get extensive feedback.\u00a0 In June, a federal jury in Amarillo found that the AQHA rules that ban the registration of cloned animals or their offspring violated federal and state antitrust laws.\u00a0 Although the jury awarded no monetary damages in the case, the judge ordered the AQHA to begin allowing the registration of clones immediately, although that has been stayed pending appeal.\u00a0\u00a0Read all posts here<\/a>.\u00a0 This case is currently pending in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and we will be keeping a close eye on the litigation throughout the next year.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 Right to Farm Laws.\u00a0 <\/strong>In addition to providing basic information about the Texas Right to Farm law<\/a>, we also kept you up to date on a number of right to farm decisions coming down across the country this year, including an Indiana decision <\/a>dismissing a suit against a hog farmer and\u00a0Tennessee decision <\/a>ruling that rock concerts were not considered farming.\u00a0 These blog posts led to several interview requests from reporters across the country who had never heard of right to farm laws.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0 Horse Slaughter Litigation.\u00a0 <\/strong>The litigation surrounding the opening of plants in the United States to slaughter horses for human consumption has been one of the most controversial topics of the year.\u00a0 It has also been full of twists and turns, including several court decisions and appeals.\u00a0 We will have more information on current happenings in this week’s\u00a0Weekly Round Up.\u00a0Read all posts discussing this issue here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0 Importance of Written Leases<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/strong>During the 2013 Texas A&M Beef Cattle Short Course, I was able to speak to a group of about 125 producers about the importance of written grazing and bull leases.\u00a0 Because of their great comments and interest during the session, I wrote a couple of articles discussing the importance of written leases<\/a>.\u00a0 We received great feedback after articles were published in the Progressive Cattleman Magazine and the Clovis Livestock Market News\u00a0newspaper.\u00a0 Blair Fannin with Texas A&M also\u00a0wrote an article about my presentation<\/a> that was published in over 20 different publications including Southwest Farm Press, Beef Magazine, and the Western Livestock Journal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
