{"id":20,"date":"2015-02-04T18:32:15","date_gmt":"2015-02-04T18:32:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/parasitology\/?page_id=20"},"modified":"2026-02-13T18:07:50","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T18:07:50","slug":"birds","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/parasitology\/research\/birds\/","title":{"rendered":"Birds"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Exotic Bird Flukes<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>In concert with the <a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/schubot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schubot Exotic Bird Health Center<\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/vtpb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Veterinary Pathobiology<\/a>, Texas A&amp;M University,\u00a0my lab is collaborating with zoos and other bird holding facilities worldwide to study\u00a0problematic\u00a0parasite species\u00a0that infect the livers (dicrocoeliids), lungs, and body cavities (cyclocoelids) of birds. These flukes appear to be accidentally introduced through newly-acquired birds to many aviaries and bird breeding facilities around the globe.\u00a0These invasive\u00a0cyclocoelids and potentially invasive dicrocoeliids\u00a0have established their life cycles and now are resulting in\u00a0many health problems, including high death rates, among the resident\u00a0bird populations in these facilities. We have developed a fully illustrated guide to assist veterinarians at bird holding facilities to detect, monitor, and design control measures for invasive problem species of parasites that is being piloted at Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago, USA.\u00a0My lab is also working\u00a0with the <a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/schubot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schubot Exotic Bird Health Center<\/a> to determine the complete life cycles of these flukes, study their histopathology, and provide background information for the development of possible detection methods and facilitate the design of better control measures.
