{"id":776,"date":"2017-04-28T13:15:15","date_gmt":"2017-04-28T18:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/?p=776"},"modified":"2017-05-12T16:40:11","modified_gmt":"2017-05-12T21:40:11","slug":"sugarcane-aphids-in-grain-sorghum-of-the-texas-coast-4282017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/sugarcane-aphids-in-grain-sorghum-of-the-texas-coast-4282017\/","title":{"rendered":"Sugarcane Aphids in Grain Sorghum of the Texas Coast &#8211; 4\/28\/2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_349\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2016\/02\/ar3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-349\" class=\"wp-image-349 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2016\/02\/ar3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2016\/02\/ar3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2016\/02\/ar3-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2016\/02\/ar3.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-349\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sugarcane Aphids on Grain Sorghum Leaf<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The sugarcane aphid is now being found in grain sorghum fields of Calhoun, Refugio and Victoria Counties.\u00a0 However, I have yet to see this aphid in numbers greater than 5 per leaf.\u00a0 I expect their numbers will increase over the next few weeks and we will see economic levels in May.<\/p>\n<p>Several effective economic thresholds have been suggested for this pest.\u00a0 I think all of them are similar and will result in field treatment at about the same time.<\/p>\n<p>To manage the sugarcane aphid, choose from these thresholds:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spray when a field reaches a level of 50 to 125 aphids per leaf (my ET).<\/li>\n<li>Spray when 25% of the plants are infested with a minimum of 50 aphids per leaf.<\/li>\n<li>Spray when 20 \u2013 30% of plants are infested with localized areas of honeydew and established colonies are present.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The best practices for managing aphids in your grain sorghum include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Scout fields weekly then biweekly after sugarcane aphids are found.<\/li>\n<li>Resistant hybrids are available but are not immune to the sugarcane aphid. Scout them as frequently as susceptible hybrids.<\/li>\n<li>Treat fields before aphids get out of hand.\u00a0 Insecticides may be less effective in controlling very high populations. Especially when excessive honeydew is on the leaves.<\/li>\n<li>Good coverage is essential.<\/li>\n<li>Transform and Sivanto are effective for control of sugarcane aphids when applied timely and properly.<\/li>\n<li>Do not expect more than 7-10 days residual control.
