These aphids are an important food source for natural enemies such as lady beetles and parasitoids.\u00a0Thus, insecticide treatments for aphids in pre-blooming cotton should be avoided if possible.<\/p>\n<p>Second, the number of aphids necessary to justify an insecticide on seedling cotton is more than 50 aphids per leaf.\u00a0 This population is rarely found.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_749\" style=\"width: 232px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_0836-sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-749\" class=\"wp-image-749 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_0836-sm-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_0836-sm-222x300.jpg 222w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_0836-sm-768x1038.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_0836-sm-758x1024.jpg 758w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_0836-sm.jpg 1436w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-749\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Parasitized Cotton Aphids (Aphid Mummies)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In fields with cotton aphids, I suggest giving the environment and beneficial insects and fungi the opportunity to control the aphids without the need for an insecticide application.\u00a0 Natural control of cotton aphids is common on the Texas\u00a0coast and costs nothing.<\/p>\n<p>One of the beneficial insects I found today\u00a0is the aphid parasitoid <em>Lysephilbus testaceipes<\/em>.\u00a0These were found on older volunteer plants with 4-5 true leaves.<\/p>\n<p>Parasitized aphids are called aphid mummies.\u00a0 They are larger, tan colored aphids with a developing parasitic wasp\u00a0inside.\u00a0These aphids are no longer feeding on the plant. If 10-20% of the aphids are mummified, most of the others are probably also parasitized as well.<\/p>\n<p>Lady beetle adults and nymphs, green lacewings nymphs and syrphid fly larvae can also prey on aphids.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 322px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cottonbugs.tamu.edu\/files\/2011\/04\/deadaphis.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"312\" height=\"188\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aphids killed by the fungus, Neozygites fresenii, appear as masses of gray colored fuzz. (https:\/\/cottonbugs.tamu.edu\/foliage-feeding-pests\/aphids\/)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rain and heavy dew will encourage the development of aphid feeding\u00a0fungi.\u00a0look for aphids\u00a0having\u00a0a fuzzy appearance, the fungus <i>Neozygites<\/i> is the likely culprit.\u00a0 This fungus can decimate an aphid population.<\/p>\n<p>If you find a field that exceeds this threshold (50 aphids per leaf), wait\u00a02-3 days and return to see if the aphids are still above this level or if their numbers are declining.<\/p>\n<p>More information on aphids in cotton can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/cottonbugs.tamu.edu\/foliage-feeding-pests\/aphids\/\">HERE<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cotton\u00a0field maturity ranges from\u00a0emergence to plants with 3-4\u00a0true leaves.\u00a0Most fields are cotyledon to 1-true leaf.\u00a0The normal insect pests we see in seedling cotton\u00a0include thrips, cutworms, mites\u00a0and aphids.
