Adults are winged and capable of drifting long distances in the wind. (<a href=\"http:\/\/cottonbugs.tamu.edu\/seedling-pests\/thrips\/\">Source<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Thrips are early-season pests of seedling cotton. In much of the state, thrips are a minor pest, but in areas prone to cool, wet conditions when plant growth is slowed, they are often a severe pest. Thrips are especially numerous in cotton grown near maturing small grains, near onion fields or seedling corn.<\/p>\n<p>Thrips attack leaves, leaf buds and very small squares and may cause a silvering of the lower leaf surface, deformed or blackened leaves, terminal loss and square loss.\u00a0 Affected plants will have leaves crinkled or cupped upward.\u00a0 Severe infestations can cause terminal death and square loss.<a href=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2017\/03\/Seedling-with-PW-IMG_0740.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-714 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2017\/03\/Seedling-with-PW-IMG_0740-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2017\/03\/Seedling-with-PW-IMG_0740-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2017\/03\/Seedling-with-PW-IMG_0740-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2017\/03\/Seedling-with-PW-IMG_0740.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most cotton is planted with an insecticide seed treatment which will provide\u00a0acceptable\u00a0control the thrips.\u00a0 The seed treatment combined with the warm temperatures and good soil moisture in the cotton fields should provide an environment where the thrips are unable to\u00a0delay crop maturity or reduce yields.<\/p>\n<p>Economic Thresholds for thrips\u00a0is published at\u00a0one thrips per true leaf through the 5th leaf stage.\u00a0 However, with good growing conditions, the plants can often sustain higher numbers without having economic damage.\u00a0 I suggest using an <strong>economic\u00a0threshold of 2 thrips\u00a0per true leaf<\/strong> this year.<\/p>\n<p>Follow this link to a video on scouting for\u00a0Thrips.
