{"id":435,"date":"2016-06-07T14:00:48","date_gmt":"2016-06-07T14:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/?p=435"},"modified":"2016-06-07T13:55:23","modified_gmt":"2016-06-07T18:55:23","slug":"mid-coast-grain-sorghum-ipm-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/mid-coast-grain-sorghum-ipm-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Mid-Coast Grain Sorghum IPM Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Grain <a href=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/06\/Rice-Stink-Bug001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-158\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/06\/Rice-Stink-Bug001-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Rice Stink Bug001\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>sorghum in the Mid-Coast of Texas ranges from Milk to hard dough.\u00a0 Harvest is just around the corner for some fields.\u00a0 This was noticeable by seeing combines and headers out of the barns getting ready for use.<\/p>\n<p>We are finding light numbers of <strong>stink bugs<\/strong> and <strong>headworms<\/strong> in fields across the mid-coast.\u00a0 Continue to check fields weekly for these pests.<\/p>\n<p>One question asked of me this past week involved how to manage stink bugs or headworms <a href=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2016\/06\/CEW-Moth.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-446\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2016\/06\/CEW-Moth-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"CEW Moth\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>in fields with light sugarcane aphids.\u00a0 My suggestion is not to skip management for the pest you have at economic levels for the pest you may or may not get later.\u00a0 If stink bugs or headworms are above threshold, make the application and prevent the yield or quality loss they cause.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sugarcane aphids<\/strong> are being found at populations of 0 to 500+ per leaf in sorghum fields of Calhoun, Refugio and Victoria county.\u00a0 Some fields are experiencing increasing numbers while other fields have crashing populations.\u00a0 Generally<a href=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2016\/06\/SCA-6-6-16.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-437\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2016\/06\/SCA-6-6-16-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"SCA 6-6-16\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>, Calhoun county sorghum currently has more problems with sugarcane aphids than either Refugio or Victoria.\u00a0 However, this may change tomorrow.\u00a0 Keep a watchful eye on all sorghum fields.\u00a0 Treat when aphids exceed 100 per leaf.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speculation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The one question we do not have an answer to is &#8220;what will the aphid population do if I don&#8217;t spray?&#8221;\u00a0 If I could answer this question, I may find myself in a more profitable career.\u00a0 In some cases, aphids will continue to increase but in others, the field population may crash. within 7 days.<\/p>\n<p>Another similar question <a href=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2016\/06\/Lady-Beetles-on-Sorghum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-438\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2016\/06\/Lady-Beetles-on-Sorghum-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Lady Beetles on Sorghum\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>is &#8220;What will the beneficial insects do to the aphid population?&#8221;\u00a0 We simply do not have enough information on how the aphids and beneficial insects behave to answer this question.\u00a0 I have read where a lady beetle may consume 20-25 aphids per day and I have seen leaves with as many as 10 lady beetle larvae; but with aphids that may produce 2 offspring per day, how can they keep up?\u00a0 The best I can do is to suggest management action when the aphids exceed 100 aphids per leaf.<\/p>\n<p>The current <strong>economic threshold of 35-125 sugarcane aphids per leaf<\/strong> was developed based on the number of aphids that cause economic grain yield losses.\u00a0 Most of these research projects had economic levels of aphids prior to milk stage sorghum.\u00a0 It stands to reason, later populations may have less of an impact on grain yield but we do not know how different this yield effect may be.\u00a0 What we do know is when aphid numbers get higher, the likelihood of control failures increase.\u00a0 Thus, to prevent an aphid population impacting harvest machinery, I suggest to continue to use the economic thresholds of 35-125 per leaf.\u00a0<strong> I prefer a treatment threshold of 100 per leaf.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Grain sorghum in the Mid-Coast of Texas ranges from Milk to hard dough.\u00a0 Harvest is just around the corner for some fields.\u00a0 This was noticeable by seeing combines and headers out of the barns getting ready for use.
