{"id":2423,"date":"2024-06-05T14:01:56","date_gmt":"2024-06-05T19:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/?p=2423"},"modified":"2024-06-05T14:03:42","modified_gmt":"2024-06-05T19:03:42","slug":"headworms-in-grain-sorghum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/headworms-in-grain-sorghum\/","title":{"rendered":"Headworms in Grain Sorghum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2020\/05\/Beat-Bucket-Sorghum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1417 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2020\/05\/Beat-Bucket-Sorghum-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Grain sorghum maturity ranges from milk to hard dough.\u00a0 Sorghum fields that have not reached hard dough should be scouted for headworms and stink bugs.\u00a0 And all sorghum should be scouted for sugarcane\/sorghum aphids.<\/p>\n<p>We have not found aphids in colonies greater than 20-40 feet in size.\u00a0 Most of these are being consumed by beneficial insects such as lady beetle, lacewing, and syrphid fly larvae.<\/p>\n<p>What was most noticeable this week was worms in younger sorghum fields.\u00a0 The older sorghum in soft dough or beyond did not seem to have as many worms as the younger sorghum.\u00a0 Fields in the milk stage or early soft dough had as many as 71 large worms (&gt; 1\/2 inch) in 100 heads.<a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2019\/07\/Sorghum-Headworm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1257\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2019\/07\/Sorghum-Headworm-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For an economic threshold for worms, divide them into medium larvae (1\/4 to 1\/2 inch) and large worms (&gt;1\/2 inch). Treat when the field averages more than <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1 medium worm on 1-2 heads<\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1 large worm in 3 heads<\/span>.
