The top 2 pictures show minimal feeding injury along the leaf veins. Bean Thrips can be found on the lower half of the<a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2022\/05\/20220518_201958532_iOS.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1953 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2022\/05\/20220518_201958532_iOS-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> plant first, and will move up the plant as populations increase. They tend to be found on the upper leaf surface more than the lower surface.<\/p>\n<p>Bean thrips are very small; 1\/16&#8243; long and the width of a hair. Adults are black or dark gray, while nymphs tend to be white or clear. <a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2022\/05\/Thrips-Dorsal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1975\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2022\/05\/Thrips-Dorsal-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have seen thrips have been a pest of soybeans in the past during dry years. In 2009, dry conditions resulted in very low soybean yields. Many fields were also infested with bean thrips. These fields had <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">significant defoliation at populations above 10 thrips per leaflet<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>My economic threshold is 10 thrips per leaflet or 30 per trifoliate, but I think a lower number may be justified. This is the beginning of the damage window for stink bugs and caterpillars. We will be scouting fields with a sweep net to find stink bugs. Treatment is justified with 36 of the stink bugs per 100 sweeps.
