May 19, 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/Sorghum-Field2015-05-07.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-93 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/Sorghum-Field2015-05-07-300x142.jpg\" alt=\"Sorghum Field2015-05-07\" width=\"300\" height=\"142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/Sorghum-Field2015-05-07-300x142.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/Sorghum-Field2015-05-07.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Grain Sorghum<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sugarcane Aphids are being found in low numbers in some sorghum fields on the Texas Coast.\u00a0 All fields should be checked at least weekly for early detection of this insect pest.<\/p>\n<p>We now have Scouting Sugarcane Aphid Cards available in my office.\u00a0 These are laminated cards with instructions on how to scout sorghum fields for sugarcane aphids.<\/p>\n<p>You can also find this information <a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/Scouting-Sugarcane-Aphids-2015.pdf\">HERE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fall Armyworms have been reported in some fields of whorl stage sorghum.\u00a0 Economic Thresholds of foliage feeders in whorl stage sorghum is 30% defoliation.\u00a0 Treatment should also be considered if the worms are feeding at the growing point or developing head.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/Cotton-Field2015-05-07-09.31.57.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-92\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/Cotton-Field2015-05-07-09.31.57-300x134.jpg\" alt=\"Cotton Field2015-05-07 09.31.57\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/Cotton-Field2015-05-07-09.31.57-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/Cotton-Field2015-05-07-09.31.57.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cotton Insect Management<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Cotton maturity ranges up to squaring cotton.<a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/Cotton-Fleahopper2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-105 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/Cotton-Fleahopper2.jpg\" alt=\"Cotton Fleahopper2\" width=\"176\" height=\"215\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 Once cotton begins to square, fields should be monitored for cotton fleahopper.\u00a0 Cotton fleahoppers can cause yield loss or delay harvest by feeding on small squares; causing them to fall off the plant.\u00a0 Once a square is the size of a match head, it is no longer susceptible to being lost as a result of fleahopper feeding.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You must be especially observant to find the small nymphs of this pest.\u00a0 They nymphs are pale green, as small or smaller than cotton aphids and move rather quickly.\u00a0 Monitor fields by carefully inspecting 5-10 plants at 5-10 spots per field.\u00a0 Larger fields require more locations to check.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The cotton varieties we plant today have a great ability to compensate for early fruit loss.\u00a0 I do not think the first three squares on the plant are worthy of protection from cotton fleahoppers.\u00a0 Recent research has demonstrated early fruit is less important to harvestable yield than in the past when late season control of weevils and worms was a considerable challenge.\u00a0 Boll weevil eradication and the introduction of Bt cotton varieties made the protection of the early fruit less important.\u00a0 Now the primary reason for an early crop is to avoid adverse weather at harvest time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I suggest waiting until the cotton plants have three fruiting sites to initiate control of cotton fleahoppers when economic thresholds are exceeded.\u00a0 In South and East Texas, a good economic threshold for cotton fleahopper is 15 per 100 plants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cotton Pest Management App<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/2015-05-19-11.26.23.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-106 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/2015-05-19-11.26.23-169x300.png\" alt=\"2015-05-19 11.26.23\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/2015-05-19-11.26.23-169x300.png 169w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/2015-05-19-11.26.23-577x1024.png 577w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/mid-coast-ipm\/files\/2015\/05\/2015-05-19-11.26.23.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cotton Pest Management App for the iPhone.\u00a0 Search for &#8220;Texas Cotton Pests&#8221;
