Cheese and milk are both foods that are found in the Dairy Food Group of the Myplate dietary guidelines. Foods from the Dairy Food Group provide calcium, vitamin D, potassium, protein and other nutrients that are needed for good health.
When choosing foods from this group always choose low-fat or fat-free to reduce the calories and saturated fat found in these foods.
Older children, teens, and adults need 3 cups a day from the Dairy Food Group while children 4 to 8 years old need 2 1/2 cups, and children 2 to 3 years old need 2 cups daily.
1 cup of milk, yogurt, 1 1/2 ounces of natural cheese, or 2 ounces of processed cheese would count as a cup from the Dairy Food Group.
