{"id":4,"date":"2011-10-03T20:52:05","date_gmt":"2011-10-04T01:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/template-agriflex\/?page_id=4"},"modified":"2022-11-18T03:19:44","modified_gmt":"2022-11-18T09:19:44","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/jjgill\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Genomics<\/h3>\n<p>Tailed phages contain dsDNA genomes ranging from about 14 kb up to over 600 kb, but most tend to be in the range of 40-300 kb.\u00a0 Phages are also incredibly diverse, containing a huge amount of sequence with no known function.\u00a0 Next-generation sequencing platforms like Illumina have allowed us to sequence phage genomes relatively cheaply.\u00a0 Part of our research focuses on the genomics of phages, as a means to characterize and predict their behavior, and also as an entry point for studying their biology.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past several years, we have helped developed a complete phage annotation pipeline based on the Galaxy platform for analysis and Apollo for visualization.\u00a0 This is the same system we use for instruction of our <a href=\"https:\/\/cpt.tamu.edu\/courses\/bich464\/\">Bacteriophage Genomics<\/a> course, and is available for public use <a href=\"https:\/\/cpt.tamu.edu\/galaxy-pub\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 We are also working on getting our tools running on the <a href=\"https:\/\/usegalaxy.eu\">main EU Galaxy<\/a> instance, so stay tuned!<\/p>\n<h3>Phage therapy<\/h3>\n<p>Phages hold great potential as natural antimicrobials.\u00a0 We are interested right now in phages that infect a number of important pathogens including <i>Salmonella<\/i>, pathogenic <i>E. coli<\/i>, <i>Klebsiella pneumoniae<\/i>, <i>Staphylococcus aureus<\/i> and <i>Burkholderia<\/i>.\u00a0 We are interested in using\u00a0 genomics to better understand the therapeutic potential of phages, by characterizing the general phage lifestyle, the mutational ability of phages, and identifying novel or interesting phage proteins.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Genomics Tailed phages contain dsDNA genomes ranging from about 14 kb up to over 600 kb, but most tend to be in the range of 40-300 kb.\u00a0 Phages are also incredibly diverse, containing a huge amount of sequence with no known function.\u00a0 Next-generation sequencing platforms like Illumina have allowed us to sequence phage genomes relatively cheaply.\u00a0 Part of our research focuses on the genomics of phages, as a means to characterize and predict their behavior, and also as an entry point for studying their biology.
