Forecast for regional growth is predicted to be strong. In the 30 years between 2005 and 2035, population in the Houston-Galveston area is expected to grow by 3.5 million residents, supporting an additional 1.5 million new jobs. Over 100,000 of those new residents will move into Galveston County. NOAA\u2019s Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP) is a remote sensing program designed to measure the type and extent of land coverage. The program provides inventories of standardized data for coastal communities. The data can be used to measure changes to land coverages and usages over time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/file\/d\/0By3e6ZiUdRjsbFVLWEtqWXpJQkE\/edit\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-64\" alt=\"CR_CCAP2006\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/05\/CR_CCAP2006-1024x791.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/05\/CR_CCAP2006-1024x791.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/05\/CR_CCAP2006-300x231.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Each land coverage is assigned into general categories, such as development, agriculture, undeveloped vegetated areas, wetlands, and open water. These analyses indicate that land development is consuming more land as people move into the area. There is a corresponding decline in most other land use categories, such as agricultural lands and vegetated undeveloped lands. At this time, the analysis is unable to determine the path of land conversion, that is, where gains in one category came at a loss in another category. It is imaginable that pasture could be allowed to become vegetated as shrub or developed into homes. Likewise, there will be shifts within categories, such as conversion of land from low to high intensity development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Land Use\/Land Cover Summary for the Highland Bayou Subbasin (Only partial study area)<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10-year increase of 154 acres in developed land<\/li>\n<li>Agricultural lands declined by 54 acres<\/li>\n<li>Undeveloped vegetated space declined by 25 acres<\/li>\n<li>Wetlands of all types declined by 82 acres<\/li>\n<li>Loss of 91 acres of open water potentially corresponds with the 94 acres gained as beach or unconsolidated land<\/li>\n<li>Approximately 47% of land in the basin is classified as developed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-507\" alt=\"CCAP_highland bayou\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/CCAP_highland-bayou.png\" width=\"673\" height=\"626\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/CCAP_highland-bayou.png 969w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/CCAP_highland-bayou-300x278.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Land Use\/Land Cover Summary for the Highland Bayou Coastal Basin (Entire Study Area)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Approximately 770 acres were converted to developed land from agricultural or other non-intensive uses.<\/li>\n<li>Freshwater wetlands declined by nearly 200 acres, but estuarine wetlands increased by approximately 93 acres.<\/li>\n<li>Vegetated undeveloped areas saw a decline of 76 acres.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-512\" alt=\"CCAP_highland bayou coastal basin\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/CCAP_highland-bayou-coastal-basin.png\" width=\"662\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/CCAP_highland-bayou-coastal-basin.png 994w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/CCAP_highland-bayou-coastal-basin-300x272.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 662px) 100vw, 662px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Why does this matter?<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tcwp.tamu.edu\/land-use\/imperviousness\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Impervious surfaces<\/strong><\/a> and<strong> land development<\/strong> are<strong> prime factors<\/strong> in loading rates <strong>for Nonpoint Source pollution<\/strong>. Increased levels of impervious surface result in less water infiltrating on the site and increases peak flow amounts and velocities above levels expected for undeveloped areas. Using CCAP data, estimates for impervious surface (IS) cover can be made for each subbasin. Ratios of impervious surface cover are defined for each NOAA CCAP land use classification. These values range from below 20% for \u2018open space development\u2019 to over 80% for \u2018high intensity development. The table below\u00a0 summarizes trends for development and impervious surface cover for each subbasin in the study area.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-520\" alt=\"impervioustable\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/impervioustable.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/impervioustable.png 879w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/impervioustable-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Relationship Between Imperviousness and Water Quality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many factors that relate to the impact of impervious surface cover on watershed health\u2014factors such as IS connectivity and runoff detention times\u2014however, raw impervious surface (IS) percentages can provide a useful metric for assessing water quality conditions. The chart below illustrates the generalized relationship between impervious surface cover and stream health.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-522\" alt=\"impervious and stream health\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/impervious-and-stream-health.jpg\" width=\"310\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/impervious-and-stream-health.jpg 310w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/impervious-and-stream-health-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Based on estimates of impervious surface cover for each subbasin, bayous and waterways within the Highland (16% IS), Marchand (21% IS), and Moses Lake (22% IS) subbasins should have \u2018impacted\u2019 aquatic health. The Texas City Ship Channel (43% IS) falls in a classification of \u2018degraded\u2019 water quality and health.
