If you take a good look around your home, you&#8217;ll find activities and practices that might be contributing to polluted runoff.<\/p>\n<h4>Why should we keep Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) out of our waterways?<\/h4>\n<p>Some consumer products contain chemicals that can harm soil, pollute local waterways, and affect the biological organisms used to treat our wastewater.<\/p>\n<p>Toxic Chemicals also have detrimental effects on drinking water quality, water used for recreation, aquatic plant and animal life, and the pipes and pumps associated with industrial and other facilities. Cleaning up water contaminated by toxic chemicals can be very difficult and quite expensive (<a href=\"https:\/\/agrilifelearn.tamu.edu\/publications_details.cfm?whichpublication=2459&amp;orderby=pubnumber&amp;SIMPLESEARCH=texas%20watershed%20steward%20handbook&amp;criteriastring=SIMPLESEARCH%3Dtexas%20watershed%20steward%20handbook\" target=\"_blank\">Texas Watershed Steward Handbook<\/a>). When it comes to chemicals more is NOT better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Do properly store all household toxic products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Do dispose of all unwanted household chemicals at a hazardous material collection site or event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Do use kitty litter to soak up car oil that leaks onto your driveway. Properly package this waste and dispose of it with household trash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Do use water-based products and low-phosphate or phosphate-free detergents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Do pass on unwanted, unexpired chemicals or paint in a good condition to friends, families or neighbors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Do reduce the amount of HHW you keep in your house by buying only what you need to do the job. Buying in bulk is not economical if do not use all of the product.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Don&#8217;t&#8230;<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000; font-size: small;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-188\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/HHWdontpic.png\" alt=\"HHWdontpic\" width=\"240\" height=\"219\" \/><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Don&#8217;t pour any unwanted chemicals down the drain-this could seriously disrupt your septic system or contaminate treated sludge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Don&#8217;t keep hazardous products within 150 feet from your well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Don&#8217;t pour any unwanted chemicals on the ground, they can leach into groundwater and contaminate runoff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Don&#8217;t dispose of old oil filters in the garbage- it is ILLEGAL in Texas to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Don&#8217;t assume that twice as much is better when it comes to any chemical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/whattodo_txt.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-983\" src=\"http:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/whattodo_txt-1024x126.png\" alt=\"whattodo_txt\" width=\"640\" height=\"79\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/whattodo_txt-1024x126.png 1024w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/whattodo_txt-300x37.png 300w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/whattodo_txt-768x95.png 768w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/highlandbayou\/files\/2013\/06\/whattodo_txt.png 1275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although avoiding household chemicals is the best solution, this may not always be possible. Proper storage and disposal is the next best way to manage your HHW.<\/p>\n<h4>The following tips will ensure the safety of both yourself and the workers that handle your HHW at collection sites and events:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep products in their original container and make sure labels are readable. This ensures you know which products you have and so do the workers who accept and sort your HHW.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Store and transport your chemicals upright, not on their sides. Make sure if you are taking HHW to a facility or event, that you have secured them in your vehicle and they are not leaking \u2013 this can be dangerous for the workers and you if leaking containers of incompatible chemicals mix.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>NEVER mix products together.
