It’s that time of year to spend a week traveling in California to see the latest and greatest in annuals, perennials, edibles and even woody ornamentals. Think of these trials as “Fashion Week” for the plant world. Breeding companies from the United States and Europe roll out their new introductions that we can expect to see in 2019.
So, here are some of the top plants that caught my eye on Day 1.
Salvia Big Blue
A new interspecific hybrid with large flower spikes and a bold blue color that will attract butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden. Big Blue will bloom throughout the summer reaching a landscape height of 36″.
Vinca Tattoo Series
A new vinca series with a dark eye that that brings a bold new look. There are 4 colors in the series: black cherry, papaya, raspberry and tangerine. These flowers have the “WOW” factor that everyone is looking for.
Salvia Mirage Salmon
Salmon is a new addition to the Mirage series. It has a great growth habit with bright salmon flowers. Landscape height is 12 -14″ in the landscape.
Canary Wings Begonia
A new addition to the Dragon Wing series. Canary Wings has a bold chartreuse foliage color that sets off its scarlet flowers. A definite eye-catcher.
Salvia Vibe Series
The Vibe Series has 3 colors: fuchsia, white and purple. Vibe Purple has deep vibrant purple flowers that have an iridescent affect in the full sun. The Vibe Series will reach 24″ in the landscape.
Vinca Soiree Double
Soiree Double blooms have two distinct layers of frilly petals. There are currently 3 colors in the series: pink white in orchid. Enjoy the uniqueness of Soiree Double in patio containers or in mixed combo planters.
Lavender Madrid Lavish Pink
Madrid Lavish Pink presents a new look in lavender flowers with multi-bracts that give the flowers longer lasting color. Lavish Pink will make a great patio plant.
